Information on Jagannath Puri Yatra



Jagannath puri Yatra is annually held in the month of June and July and whole of Orissa gets engulfed in the very atmosphere of this occasion. There is a myriad of people coming from all over to celebrate and participate in this divine occasion.

This Yatra begins at the Jagdish temple in Jamalpur and commemorates the journey of Lord Krishna to Mathura. There are big chariots that are colorfully decorated followed by decorated elephants, vehicles and a large group of people following on their bare foots. This Yatra is followed back in which Lord Krishna with his brother and sisters are brought back to Jagannath Puri and this is called "Ultarath".

This time is a very special time in Orissa and everyone is involved in it. It will be exciting to know that though this Yatra takes place in Jagannath puri, there are similar Yatra processions that takes place on a smaller scale in other parts of India by the devotees who are unable to make it to the main Yatra in Jagannath Puri. Some such places are Varanasi, Calcutta and Ranchi.

This whole event fills one with excitement, joy and that very holy feeling which resides within deep fathoms of oneself. Devotees show their respect and love to their Lord by the way of this Yatra and this Yatra becomes more special as in it the Almighty is treated as a human King who is being brought to the level of humans from that divine and glorious image of its. Ample number of rituals takes place in this Yatra and they all are worth watching as it is an experience of its own kind without substitutes.
