Christmas Cruises: Getting the Best Deal

If you feel the need for a break from the cold and snow, then a Christmas cruise may be exactly what the doctor ordered. Because these cruises are in the winter, some of the best deals can be found for you and your family. With such deals, you can plan the perfect cruise in order to escape the depressing cold weather.

Affordable winter cruises are made possible because the major cruise lines frequently offer winter cruises for ridiculously low rates. You can travel to places such as the Caribbean and South America for lower rates than in the summer. You can also take cruises to such locations as Australia and Asia. Perhaps you might want to see the Northern Lights. They are only visible between the months of November and March, so there are some great winter cruises that make seeing them quite possible. It is true that it is a bit cold when you move to the north, but getting there consists of warm climates and beautiful sights.

Saving More Money

There are also deals that include roundtrip airfare, so look for these bundled deals to see how much money you can save on getting to your launch location. This is a lot better than having to buy all of your plane tickets separately from your cruise tickets. The airlines and the cruise lines work out deals together to give you the best rates possible. By giving you the best rates possible, it makes it more likely that you're going to take your family on a Christmas cruise.

Another way to get the best deal on your Christmas cruise is to look for certain dates that offer 2-for-1 cruise fares. These dates are frequently found between November and the second week of December. It is true that two weeks before Christmas hardly qualifies as Christmas, but you can find some of the best deals during this period since Christmas cruises are becoming more and more popular. Consider it an early Christmas present to your family. You can also think of the fact that you will be home in time for everyone to have family time and for the kids to be home to open their gifts from Santa on Christmas morning.

Then again, you can take your family on a cruise after Christmas because the rates tend to drop right after the holiday is over. You can take that Christmas money that was given to you by relatives and invest in cruise tickets for the family. This also means that a winter cruise may make a great gift for that special couple in your family. The possibilities are literally endless. And if you want to celebrate the Christmas holiday on a cruise ship, you can do that as well. By taking advantage of bundled deals and discount coupons that can be found on the internet and various travel sites, you can still take a Christmas cruise on a budget.

A Great Idea

So if you're looking for that perfect winter vacation and you want to do something different and really special for you and your family, this is a great way to go. It has only been in recent times that individuals have realized the uniqueness and the fun that is associated with a winter cruise. It helps get rid of those winter blues in ways you could not imagine. What's even better is that you'll come home renewed and refreshed from fun in the sun and beautiful sites. That may cause your friends and family to start gathering up Christmas cruise tickets of their own for the next year.

Figuring Out Yachting Equipment

Equipment to Ensure Smooth Sailing

A yacht is a sophisticated vessel and requires a large amount of equipment to function. While many of things come standard on any size yacht, some may need to be brought along with you or checked that they are indeed already in place.

Registration Papers and all documentation pertaining to the yacht must be kept on board.

Anchors are essential on board a yacht. Should you find the perfect idyllic spot to stop and go snorkelling, swimming or scuba diving, an anchor is the only way to ensure that your yacht won’t have drifted away by the time you return.

Boat Hooks protect you from injury during the docking process.

Mooring Lines are used during the docking process, which is often the trickiest part of a journey. Relying on equipment to hold the yacht steady and bring her into dock is much safer and more reliable than your arms and legs.

Navigation Lights are usually a federal requirement on board any yacht, particularly on those that are motorised. Their use is mandatory after dark.

A Bilge Pump or any other type of de-watering device is used in the event of the yacht beginning to take on water.

A Basic Tool Kit can come in handy when you need to fix that broken light bulb or squeaky galley drawer. It is useful to keep a torch and spare batteries in here too.

Yachting Safety Equipment

It is also essential that you and your passengers are safe on board your yacht at all times. A yachting holiday is an incredible experience whether you are in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or South East Asia, and no one wants it to be marred by a little sunburn. Being prepared is the only way to ensure that everyone enjoys their time on board and that any potential setbacks can be avoided.

First Aid Kits should always be on hand so that minor incidents such as cuts and bruises can be dealt with on board and do not have to force a trip to the mainland. Every first aid kit should also include sunscreen and after-sun ointment for a soothing end to a languid day in the sunshine.

A Marine Radio is essential on board any vessel and acts as your primary connection to the mainland. Make sure that at least two people on board know how to use it and can radio out if the need arises.

A Chart and Compass or GPS is useful if you intend to sail far off shore. Heading out without a clear idea of where you are going is never a good plan. Having someone on board who can read a compass and chart a course should be a requirement.

A Throwable Flotation Device or a life ring acts as a life saving device should anyone fall overboard and should be kept in an easily accessible place on deck.

A Fire Extinguisher is a requirement on any vessel and larger yachts may be required to carry more than one. Ensure that your fire extinguisher is Coast Guard approved and keep it in the vicinity of the engine or fuel tank.

A Horn or Whistle is legally required to be carried on board any yacht sailing in federal waters.

Visual Distress Signals are necessary on both day and night voyages and should be within their expiration date.

Yachting Equipment for You

Once your yacht is fully equipped and you are confident that you have whatever would be needed in an emergency, the next step is to make sure that you are also prepared.

Drinking Water should be kept in a safe place as an emergency supply.

Snacks that are high in protein and are non-perishable will be a lifesaver should you be away from land perusing some spectacular coral reefs for an extended period of time.

Hats and Sun screen are a non-negotiable necessity on board a yacht. No one wants to have to spend their yachting holiday below deck thanks to a scorching sunburn.

Life jackets are essential on board, especially if you intend to make use of water sports equipment like wind surfers or wave runners.

A Cell Phone can retain its signal at surprising distances out to sea. Keeping one on board can be handy to get in touch with loved ones or be reachable should anyone need you back home.

Warm Clothes are vital on board a yacht. Nights can get cold out on the open sea and you don’t want to shiver throughout your holiday. But this doesn’t mean that you should bring huge amounts of clothing. Space on a yacht is limited, so pack light with necessities over accessories.

Regular Medications are easy to forget and can make a yachting holiday unpleasant if you do not have them on hand.

A Camera is not exactly an essential, but with those breathtaking sunsets waiting for you, you will be sorry if you left yours behind.

Avoiding All the Equipment

If your dream of sailing off into the sunset, cocktail in hand now feels like it is drowning in admin and things to remember, there is another way to go. Heading out on a yacht charter means that all these details are sorted out for you well in advance and all that is left for you to do is step on board. Companies organise private yacht charters on vessels ranging in size from 20 ft to 150 ft. Consultants can help tailor your yachting itinerary to suit your needs, hire the right crew and even equip your yacht. From the docking papers to the chef, a Yacht Broker can ensure that your holiday is hassle-free and fully equipped with everything you could ever need on board. From safety equipment to entertainment features, Yachting Partners International ensures that all your needs are catered for and that all eventualities are accounted for.

Luxurious Cruises at Bargain Prices

The cruise ship business is booming. Millions of Americans are taking vacations afloat every year and 6 huger passenger liners (including the largest cruise ship in the world, Freedom of the Seas) were launched in 2006.

There is such an overwhelming array of iteneries, ships, packages and prices today that it can seem almost impossible to know whether you're getting the right trip at the right price.

Here are more than a dozen smart strategies -

- Get an early bird discount. If you book from 6 months to a year before departure, most cruise lines will discount their published retail rates. You'll also get your first choice of cabin category and location. You must make a small deposit, perhaps $200 per person for a 5 day cruise, but usually you can cancel without penalty up to 60 days prior to departure.

- Look for off-season specials. Schedule your trip when other people do not. For example, most people want to visit Alaska in the summer, so if you're looking for a more attractive rate, go in May or September. Cruise the Caribbean in the spring or summer, or try the Mediterranean in the winter. Avoid holidays and school vacation weeks. Of course, the trade-off may be the weather. For example, Athens can be downright chilly in the winter.

- Take a 'repositioning' cruise. Some of the year's lowest rates can be found in the spring when ships relocate from their winter home ports in the Caribbean, Florida, Hawaii or Mexico to their summer bases in Europe, New York, Vancouver or Alaska. The same goes for the late fall, when ships return to southern locations for the peak season that starts before Christmas.

- Find a last-minute deal. Because the cruise lines want to keep their ships full, you can get good discounts by booking only a month or two before departure, when a line finds it still has unsold cabins. The downside is that you might not get a cruise you really want because the choice of ships and cabins will be limited.

- Be flexible. If you're willing to sail on a different date than you originally intended, sometimes even by only a week or two, you may be able to get the very same cabin on the same ship for significantly less money. And if you aren't rigid about your dates and itineraries, you'll have better luck nailing down a last-minute special.

- Look for the 2 for 1 promotion. On some sailings, two passengers can share a cabin for the price of one. These deals however are based on the full brochure rate, and in some cases, they do not include port charges and other fees that can be substantial. Airfare to and from the port city may also be extra. Another popular promotion is a 'second passenger 50% off' deal, where one passenger pays a discounted rate and the second passenger pays only half of that.

- Pick a port near home. If you can find a cruise that departs from a port that's within driving distance of home, you won't have to spend money on airline tickets or hotels. There are at least 32 home ports in North America and 75% of the US population lives within driving distance of one of them.

- Snag a senior discount. Cruise brokers frequently offer discounts to passengers over a certain age, usually 55, and their cabin mates of any age, especially on last-minute choices. The cruise lines too have similar promotions for sailings that are not expected to be full.

- Go with a group. Many lines will give you a reduced group rate. They may even toss in a free cabin if you organize a group that exceeds a specified minimum number of people, typically anywhere from 6 to 8 or 16. Negotiate! You might even get upgrades or extra amenities.

- Take the kids, or grandkids, for free. Off-season sailings will frequently offer to take children for free. Of course, that means you will all be in the same cabin. With four to a cabin, it can get pretty crowded. But remember, you probably won't be spending much time in your cabin.

- Share the cabin. If you're traveling with friends or relatives, you can save a bundle when they share your cabin. Sometimes third and fourth adults may even go for free. But if you are looking at an air/cruise package, make sure airfare is included for the entire group if you are not within driving distance of the port city.

- Ask what's included. Extra charges are not always included in the quoted price. Factor in all the port charges, taxes, handling fees and other costs before comparing deals.

- Double check before you book. Before booking a cruise, call the cruise line or broker or visit their website, because you may find a sale rate that's better than what you've decided upon. But make sure the cabin category, location and other important considerations are equivalent.

- Consult a specialist. After you've done your own research and have an idea of what you want, acquire the services of a travel agent who specializes in cruises. An expert can help you sort everything out, find the best prices for your preferred itinerary, advise you on getting the best cabin and may even be able to throw in a few extras such as shipboard credit, shore excursions or a bottle of wine every night.

Famous Yachts

The Allure of the Yacht

Nothing quite equals the fantasy of lying back on the deck of a yacht, the sun warming your face and a cocktail in hand. From its days as a feared war craft to its rise as the most sought after leisure cruiser, the allure of the yacht is as timeless as it is enigmatic.

The yacht began life as a military vessel that utilised its speed and manoeuvrability to carry vital military messages between battalions. There are few historical sea battles that the yacht did not play a significant part in. From a triumphant military history to the vessel of choice for kings and queens, the yacht has its own special place in history.

The Grand Yachts of History

The Duyfken

One of the world’s most memorable yachts is the Duyfken, a Dutch three-masted gem that was armed with several cannons. Her speed and manoeuvrability made her the perfect scout and messenger in times of battle and is credited with playing a critical role in the defeat of the Portuguese blockade that allowed the Dutch entrance to the lucrative spice trade in 1601. The years that followed saw this yacht head out on many exploratory adventures in search of new avenues for trade. From Cape Agulhas to the Mozambique Channel and on to India, the Duyfken became one of the most travelled yachts of the 17th century.

But it was the Duyfken’s 1606 journey that made it one of the grandest and most memorable yachts in history. Captained by Willem Janszoon, the next Dutch voyage headed out in search of the legendary King Solomon’s mines in the south east and took the yacht and her sailors to the furthest ends of the Earth then known to man. Heading further south than New Guinea, the yacht and its crew happened upon the Cape York Peninsula, better know today as Australia. Captain Janszoon and his yacht the Duyfken are officially acknowledged as the first authenticated European voyage to the Australian continent. By 1608, the Duyfken was declared to be damaged beyond repair and this remarkable little yacht, who helped make all seven continents known to European geographers, ended her time on the sea.

The America

Designed by revolutionary yacht designer George Steers, the 101 ft America was one of the first racing vessels to benefit from his trademark knife-like bow widening aft that increased speed and agility. This design was put to the test in 1851, when the America entered the first ever Royal Yacht Squadron's "One Hundred Guinea Cup". In the prestigious 53 mile race around the Isle of Wight, the America won by eight minutes under the watchful eye of Queen Victoria. This esteemed international racing trophy was then renamed the America Cup after its inaugural winner and is a tradition that still challenges sailors today.

The America changed hands many times following her famous win and was owned by private sailors to military commanders, but few were committed to her upkeep. By 1940 she was owned by the US Naval Academy but her once majestic oak, cedar and chestnut frame was seriously decaying. When her shed home collapsed in 1945, she was burned along with the debris.

The Magnificent Yachts of Our Time

Christina O

A 1943 Canadian convoy escort, this yacht was purchased and converted by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1954. Named after his daughter Christina, this vessel became the world’s most luxurious and advanced private yacht. Throughout its time as Onassis’ floating home until 1975, the Christina O was the floating ‘who’s who’ of Hollywood, entertaining the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas and King Farouk of Egypt.

The famous Ari’s Bar on board is the spot where President John F Kennedy first met Sir Winston Churchill and the deck was witness to the wedding of Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier and Onassis himself to Jackie Kennedy. After Onassis’ death, the Christina O was donated to the Greek government and has recently been bought by John Paul Papanicolaou. This shipping magnate and Onassis family friend is meticulously restoring the Christina O to her former high-seas glory.

The Unusual Cosmic Muffin

The technologically advanced Boeing 307 Stratoliner was one of ten planes made in 1939 that could fly above any bad weather. Owned by the infamous Howard Hughes, becoming the Hughes 307, only two of these planes survived the tumultuous 1940s - the one safely housed in the National Air and Space Museum and the other in Fort Lauderdale.

The fierce hurricane Cleo severely damaged the Hughes 307 in Fort Lauderdale, to the point of scrapping in 1964. But the fuselage was saved and in 1974, launched as the world’s most unusual yacht. The original 1939 controls are used to pilot the yacht and it is powered by twin Yamaha motors, with a cruising speed of 13 knots. The inspiration for books and songs, this vessel has been visited by Oprah, CNN, the Travel Channel and countless other media. Custom designed furniture and fittings make the interior luxurious and the Cosmic Muffin recently sold on eBay for over $9 million.

The World’s Most Exclusive Yacht

Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Saudi Arabian defence minister, is the proud owner of one of the world’s largest yachts, the Al Salamah. The 457 ft vessel sports facilities that can only be guessed at, due to the secrecy of the crew and its owner. Rumours put the room count at over 90, including a hospital and an indoor swimming pool. Her tight deadline meant that builders only had two years to complete the finished yacht, make her one of the most impressive feats of yachting construction in our times.

The Yacht Takes Over Hollywood

No sea adventure in Hollywood is complete without the majestic character of the yacht. As winds ravage the ocean and humans battle nature, it is the yacht that acts as the most exciting and unusual set possible.

Whether it is a pivotal part of the plot, like the runaway speed boat in Speed 2, or a unique location to move the story along, yachts make for a favourite tool of filmmakers. In the latest Superman instalment, Superman Returns, Lex Luther conducts his evil business from a 200 ft luxury yacht. The Gertrude acted as the exterior of this magnificent getaway vehicle and the interior was a full 360° set built on a sound stage in Australia and enabled viewers to get a total view of the wealth and luxury of the villain.

Even out of the water, a yacht holds a certain romantic appeal and the modern movie version of riding off into the sunset is fast becoming sailing off into the setting sun aboard a luxury yacht. In The Wedding Date it is the yacht in the driveway that makes the ideal location for the main characters’ first rendezvous. When they are caught in the morning by the girl’s father, his comment of “Well, I'm glad to see that someone is making good use of her again” of course referred to the yacht.

Casino Royale, James Bond’s latest adventure makes use of no less than five versions of the Sunseeker in its spectacular yacht sequence. The interior of the yacht was then rebuilt on a hydraulic sound stage to mimic the movement of the ocean. While many yachts are specifically built for films, often some are simply chartered. Yacht Brokers have a myriad of luxury yachts on offer, ranging in size and type. Internet forums are often alive with the thrills of recognising real life yachts in films or seeing personal handiwork on screen.

Selling a Yacht

Selling a Yacht - Where to Start?

Whatever your reason for selling your yacht, be it upgrading or simply moving on to the next adventure, the process can be simple and easy. The easiest place to start is to decide how you are going to sell – through a broker, privately or as a trade-in. From there, the process is simple. With a broker, you can rest assured that all the work will be done for you at a price. If selling your yacht yourself, following these easy guidelines can help make the process a pleasant and successful one.

Getting Your Yacht Ready for Sale

As with all things, presentation is key and a clean and well-maintained yacht will only impress and sell quickly. It goes without saying that the deck should be scrubbed, the varnish restored to its original shine and the galley be free of crumbs and dirty dishes. If you intend to keep any of the yacht’s extras, like the waverunner or skis, remove them before a viewing - buyers could be put off by what they then see as misleading features.

Make sure the engine is checked and clean and starts the first time that it is fired. Any dirt around this area is a sign of poor maintenance that could make buyers question the value of the yacht. Once everything is clean and smelling fresh, set the scene for the viewings. Have the table set with beautiful tableware suggesting a romantic onboard meal. Lay the deck out with sun beds and bright towels, simply inviting guests to imagine what it would be like to laze the summer afternoons away on their new yacht.

When to Sell Your Yacht

The best time to think about selling your yacht is at the beginning of the yachting season in your area. Buyers are most interested when the sun is shining and they can picture themselves on the deck enjoying a cocktail while the waves splash beneath them.

How to Sell Your Yacht

There are three basic choices when choosing to sell your yacht – selling it privately, trading it in or using a yacht broker. Smaller vessels can usually be sold easily by their owners but larger yachts require complicated papers and negotiations that are best left to the professionals. While you may make the most profit out of selling privately, the time and hassle involved usually outweigh the benefits, sending most people straight to a broker.

Trading in your yacht is only best done when purchasing a new one. Many dealers prefer not to take trades on used yachts and the amount offered varies considerably amongst dealers, usually well below market value. Trade-ins can however save you money, as sales tax is only worked out on the selling amount less the trade-in value, which for some, makes this option the most cost-effective.

The Paperwork and Legalities Involved in Selling a Yacht

As with any asset changing hands, there is paperwork that needs to be filled out and legalities that need to be taken into account. Selling privately means that you need to type up a bill of sale that includes the names of all involved, their details, the price and the type of yacht along with its registration numbers. This document can act as the receipt of the transaction. A cashiers or certified cheque is the best option for payment, for both the deposit and the final amount.

Do not simply sign over the pink slip of the boat to the new owner. Send in the accompanying form to the registration authorities specifying that the yacht has been sold and to whom it now belongs. Failure to do so could result in you being held liable for accidents caused by the new owner.

While you are not legally required to volunteer information about the yacht, concealing a defect can be to your detriment and it is in everyone’s best interest to be upfront. Finally, once the yacht is sold and leaves your possession, be sure to cancel your insurance and apply for a refund on any pre-paid amount.

Using a Yacht Broker

All the documentation needed to sell your yacht privately can be overwhelming and in order to keep the process as simple as possible, a yacht broker can be your best option. Handling every aspect of the process, a broker is likely to fetch the best price for your yacht and with the absolute minimum amount of hassle to you.

Brokerage firms are experienced in the buying and selling of yachts of all sizes and make the process a seamless one. Once confirmed as your broker, such a firm will prepare all the full technical specification of your craft and suggest the best price to you. Once agreed upon, a yacht broker will launch a comprehensive marketing campaign that guarantees a quick sale to the right buyer at the best possible price. All aspects of the sale, from the cleaning of the yacht to the showings and paperwork can be covered by the broker, leaving you to simply sign the final papers.

Tips for Dealing with Yacht Brokers

Brokers work on commission which can range from five to ten percent of the selling price, similar to real estate agents. Some brokers specialise in a particular type of yacht and are more likely to have access to specific and serious buyers. In these cases, a higher commission can be beneficial as you receive the pay-off of an experienced broker that is likely to get you the best price.

You should always sign a listing agreement with a yacht broker that has been fully explained to you. All brokers that belong to an association are required to abide by a code of ethics. By these ethics they should outline the best type of listing agreement for you and not for them.

Buyers usually request a marine survey that inspects the condition of your yacht. Any defaults are then used to either negotiate a new price or are requested to be fixed by you, the owner. Make sure your broker is clear on how much you are willing to spend on repairs and how low you would be willing to drop the asking price.

10 Best Beaches of France

When I think of France I do not immediately think of stunning beaches, I think instead of Paris. But I must stand corrected because the south of France has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There are a wide selection of beaches in France to satisfy every need. France is surrounded by the English Channel, Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea.

The French Riviera is located on the eastern Mediterranean coast from Cannes to Menton. This is the holiday you want to take if you are looking for upscale adult vacationing. The Côte d'Azur is the coast to the south and is the ideal spot for "alone time" although it can get a little crowded in some spots. It is also a great spot for surfing. Brittany on the north Atlantic coast and the surrounding area has beaches with family attractions.
Cannes While the world famous film festival may keep tourists busy, there is no denying the beach here is fun. This is a laid back beach town, rich in the arts and film. Check out the sand castles while you are on the beach. If you hunt for bargains, this can be a reasonable beach vacation.
Beach at Nice
This beach is enormously popular on the French Riviera. The actual beach is comprised of pebbles instead of sand. It gets very crowded during the summer months.
Menton Beach
Menton is a quaint little beach town and of all the beaches on the French Riviera, Menton's beaches are the most family friendly. The atmosphere is far more relaxed, far from the wild partying beach town that its neighbors are.
Monaco
The beaches in Monaco are upscale and are adjacent to opulent high-rise hotels and casinos. This is an adult environment and there is plenty of fun to be had sun bathing during the day and gambling at night.
Arcachon Beaches
The small town of Arcachon sits next to the Atlantic Ocean. This beach area is free of crowds except at peak time of summer vacation. If you visit this beach you must walk along the Dune du Pyla, which lies between the ocean and the largest forest in France, Les Landes. This is huge dune elevated and overlooks the Atlantic.
Biarritz Beaches
While the Biarritz beachfront was once wildly popular, in the last forty or fifty years tourists have migrated to the French Riviera to empty their wallets. While these may not the most ideal beaches, they are less crowded, have less traffic, and have less expensive accommodations. Beaches are free to visit.
Garoupe Beach - Cap d'Antibes
This is a very exclusive beach that is split off into sections some of which are free to the public. This beach faces the east so when you are on the beach the sun is not in your face. It is also sheltered from the wind and this makes it pleasant.
St. Jean de Luz St.
Jean de Luz beach is located just south of Biarritz in the town of St. Jean de Luz. This is a well-kept and clean beach with a convenient sea wall separating the beach from the town. The architecture of the town is carefully preserved and the old 17th and 18th century structures are just amazing. This is a quiet and peaceful beach experience.
Cap d'Agde
Located next to Montpellier, Cap d'Agde is famous for their nude beaches. However, the tendency to divest one's clothes may extend to the city as a whole. Maybe we should leave the kiddies at home.
La Rochelle
This is a quaint port town located on the Atlantic coast. The beach has shallow waters and is great for families with young children.

Creating a Bird Haven with the Right Feeders

Having bird feeders is a wonderful way to enjoy having birds frequent your garden, yard, or any place in which you may live. The type of bird feeder that you choose depends on where you live. There are some basic features to watch for when purchasing or building your bird feeders. You also need to know how to maintain your bird feeder to keep your feathered friend coming back to spend time with you.

Types of Bird Feeders
The type of bird feeder that you purchase or build depends on the type of birds that you want to attract, the type of food needed to attract the birds and the area where the bird feeder will be placed. Hummingbirds for example require a liquid food called nectar. Hummingbird feeders are usually plastic or glass and bright red or have parts that are bright red. Plastic and glass feeders are easy to clean. Glass feeders usually have a tub that the hummingbirds can drink from. These types of feeders are made to hang. They can be hung from trees, overhangs, windows and other areas. Suet feeders are wire mesh or plastic mesh feeders that hold suet. These feeders hang from a pole or trees. Examples of the type of birds attracted to these feeders are woodpeckers, jays and others. Thistle feeders for small birds such as goldfinch and redpolls have tiny holes that allow these birds to eat the seeds. Thistle feeders may be hung from a tree or a pole. Hopper feeders are great because they can hold a large amount of bird seed that is kept dry and protected. It is recommended to place this type of feeder on a pole approximately five feet from the ground. Hopper feeders provide you with a variety of different birds. You may have large birds such as cardinals eating from the hopper and what is dropped to the ground is then eaten by smaller birds. Sunflower seed tube feeders are hung at least five feet from the ground. This is the type that you see hung close to windows and are easy to see. These maybe used by people who are not able to get out as often. This is one feeder that easily allows them to enjoy watching birds.
Maintenance of Bird Feeders
It is essential that you maintain your bird feeder. Bird feeders that are not kept clean may harbor diseases that can be passed on to other birds. The best way to maintain your bird feeders and prevent the spread of infection is to "immerse the feeder in a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water" (Audubon Society). Cleaning up old seeds and hulls from under and around bird feeders can also help. One other item to consider with feeders is avoiding overcrowding. This will also make the maintenance of your bird feeders easier. Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned with a solution of mild soap and water, rinse them thoroughly and dry. Due to the use of nectar for feeding hummingbird feeders have to be cleaned more frequentlyPlacing several different types of feeders in the area that you have chosen will bring different types of birds. Enjoy hummingbirds, song birds, finches, chickadees, woodpeckers and many others. Finding out what types of birds there are in the region where you live makes the process of choosing the correct feeders easier. Maintenance of your feeders is not hard when compared with the benefits and enjoyment. This is a fun and exciting project that the whole family can enjoy. Have fun and make new feathered friends!

Retirement in Thailand

Retirement life is a period when man tries to enjoy the rest of his life in peace. After the struggles of life, which made him tired, he will be looking for a place where he can live hi retirement with his family and enjoy life to its last drop till the end. He can look for a retirement in any of the foreign countries, but will be looking for a place where cost of life is less. For a lesser cost of living, he wants a standard for the life there and will be looking for health care facilities, quality food etc. he wants a place where crime rate is comparatively less to avoid tensions and risks. Most importantly, he will love to be in a place that has wonders and beauty built in it.

As compared to a retirement life in any other countries, retirement Thailand will be the best choice. The most important factor that attracts most of the old aged people to Thailand is the extremely low rate of living there. Another greatest attraction of Thailand is the modern facilities provided which will equal that in any other European country.

Thailand culture is heavily influenced by Buddhism. There have been influences from Hinduism as well. Thailand history is the pride and prestige of the nation. It is this proud history that makes Thailand a land of diverse culture and traditions. Since Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, the place has interesting stories from the time of kings and Kingdoms. The land is comprised of 76 provinces and these are again divided into districts and villages. The capital city of Thailand is Bangkok. This city is the centre of political, commercial and industrial activities of Thailand.
Chiang Mai culture is evolved from the fascinating history of the place which has over hundred years of age. Chiang Mai culture, tradition and festivals are a mixture of local as well as immigrated communities from all over the world. This ethnic beauty in culture attracts tourists from all over the world. Chiang Mai is a city surrounded by mountains and is a best place for retirement Thailand. This has been voted as the best place to live in Asia. The city is modern as well as cosmopolitan and at the same time, the Chiang Mai culture is not destroyed in course of the development. Chiang Mai temples are a symbol of the varied heritage of Thailand portrayed in unique architectural style.
Elements from the temples of other places including Sri Lanka, Burma and Lann Thai are mixed up with all beauty in Chiang Mai temples. The temples are attractive with intricate woodcarvings and the Naga serpent stairs. These wonderful structures inside the Chiang Mai temples are an awesome example of the Buddhist religion and its tradition. They are the temples used for religious functions and the temples used as living quarters for Buddhist monks. The temples are made more wonderful with gilded umbrellas and stupas. Figures from stories of Ramayana and god filigree add to the beauty of the temples.

A Quick Tour Of Italy - Western Apulia

Apulia is the heel of the Italian boot. It is situated in the southeast corner of Italy on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Apulia was often invaded by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Its many rulers included the Byzantines, Goths, Lombards, Normans, Spaniards, and Turks. Apulia's moment of greatest glory was in the Holy Roman Empire of the 13th Century, when majestic Romanesque cathedrals and palaces were built. This article presents the western and usually northern part of Apulia. A companion article presents the rest of the region.

Apulia's administrative center is Bari, the biggest city in southern Italy, with a population of over 325 thousand. It is a major port that includes a modern city center and an old town which you won't want to miss. Everywhere you turn you can see the Adriatic Sea. The pedestrian-only street Via Sparano is the site of evening strolls. The nearby Eleventh Century Bascilica di San Nicola is said to contain the remains of St. Nicholas, yes Santa Claus. According to legend local sailors stole his remains from Turkey. Funny, I was always under the impression that Santa Claus... To the northeast you will find the small port of Trani, once a major Adriatic port. Trani's attractions include two medieval synagogues and several historic churches.

The spur of Italy's boot is the Promontorio del Gargano (Gargano Promontory), which is a very popular tourist destination. Its mountain roads are very curvy so pay strict attention to your driving. Near the tip you'll find the whitewashed town of Vieste which is known for its castle. You should take a ferry from Vieste to the nearby archipelago Isole Tremiti, but please don't forget the word Tremiti as in tremor. The view is really spectacular.

The Foresta Umbra (Shady Forest) encompasses well over sixty thousand acres. It is home to hundreds of animal species and two thousand plant species many of which are normally associated with northern climes. Monte Sant'Angelo has been a major pilgrim destination for centuries. You'll want to see the Santuario di San Michele (Sanctuary of San Michele) and the Tomba di Rotari (Tomb of Rotari), a medieval baptistery. Finish your tour of western Apulia at the famous Castel del Monte, which is a mysterious eight-sided castle built in the Thirteenth Century.

Among Apulia's classified foods are Clementines, Olives, two Cheeses, and four Olive Oils. Be sure to see our companion article I Love Touring Italy - Western Apulia for a sample menu and more information on Apulia wines as well as an in-depth examination of western Apulia's tourist attractions. The best-known local wine is Castel del Monte DOC, which is available overseas and is frankly not that great.

Kenya holidays - the experience of a lifetime

Kenya holidays are that once in a lifetime experience not to be missed; whether you choose an exotic beach holiday to kenya, a luxury Kenya safari holiday or a twin centre holiday combining both options.

It would seem that the british public have fallen in love with Kenya holidays and all they have to offer. The main reasons for this are the combination of the great year round climate, the wonderful cultural experience and the incredible value for money this destination offers.

The accommodations in Kenya vary in quality from budget low cost hotels right through to some of the best luxury 5 star properties. Many of the hotels are clustered together in the most popular beach resorts, within an hour or so of Mombasa international airport.

If you are considering a safari as part of your Kenya holidays then there are so many to choose from. You can fly direct to Mombasa on a UK charter flight and take a short 1 or 2 night safari excursion from your hotel or alternatively fly via Nairobi and stop off for a 4 or 5 night safari in the Masai Mara.

The opportunities for viewing wildlife in this magnificent country are abundant; however the type of game viewing will be dictated somewhat by the areas you choose to visit. There is one thing for sure, whether it is the Tsavo National Parks or the Masai Mara you will certainly not be left disappointed by your Kenya holidays.

Combining a beach and safari holiday to Kenya need not be as expensive as you first imagine. You can combine a Kenya beach holiday with a simple 2 night safari to the Tsavo National Parks for as little as eight hundred pounds each and even if you stretch to a luxury Masai safari with a luxury beach stay this can still come in well under two thousand pounds.

The weather in Kenya is fairly consistent year round but there are annual rains that occur between April and July each year. These rains generally come in short bursts and will not deter from the enjoyment of your Kenya holidays.

Kenya holidays have so much to offer and are something we should all experience at least once in our lifetimes.

UK Hotel Breaks

What do you do when you have a spare few days off work. Do you stay at home or do you take advantage of one of the many cheap flights available with the low cost airlines and head off for a quick hotel break.

These days there are lots of destinations to choose from more and more airports around the UK and Ireland. Airports that were previously unpopular or uneconomical to use are having aircraft arrive from other similar airports all over Europe.

The choice of destinations is now larger than they have ever been and you can jet off cheaply by booking a bargain flight then getting some accommodation online and jetting off for the weekend.

But going away overseas does have its disadvantages especially if you are short of time. Not all the flights are suitable for an overnight trip in a foreign city. Some flights leave in the early afternoon and by the time you get there and get into the city centre it could be into the early part of the evening. Usually if you leave in the afternoon the return flight is more than likely to be a mid morning one, leaving you just one evening away at your destination. Even if you do stay longer you still lose a large proportion of your trip travelling.

A lot of people overlook the possibility of having a short break in the UK possibly because of the weather or because it does not sound as impressive to your friends as saying you flew off for the weekend.

Flights within the UK and Ireland can offer a better solution for your hotel break. With an increased number of flights you could get to your destination on an early flight and return on a late flight in the evening. This would enable you to spend more time enjoying your destination than sitting in the airport.

There are lots of exciting cities to visit in the UK and Ireland such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, London, Dublin, Manchester and many more. Each destination have it's own unique attractions.

Why not spend more time away at a UK destination than in the airport. You do not have to take the plane you could drive or take the train. More and more hotels offer more than just a room for the night. You could even book a murder mystery weekend or visit a theme park or spend the day on the Orient Express. There are lots of different hotel break options available.

The Best "Lesser-Known" Sightseeing Stops On A Eurail Vacation

Previously know as Europass, Eurail travels through over 20 beautiful and scenic countries. With a list of destinations that includes France, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Italy and Spain; there are world famous sightseeing stops that are fairly obvious. Many travellers feel that a Eurail vacation would not be complete without stopping at sightseeing hotspots such as the Eiffel Tower in France, the Rhine River in Germany and the Acropolis in Greece.

These incredible sightseeing stops are a great start to a Eurail vacation. However, considering the amount of countries Eurail runs through, each with its own distinct history and landmarks, there are many great sightseeing stops that are overlooked. These nations are often traveled through by Eurail vacationers, but are certainly not explored to the extent that France and Germany are, for example. Eurail vacations offer sightseeing travel through Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern Europe. Throughout this impressive scope of cultures and countries, it’s understandable that certain sightseeing destinations get passed by. If you are considering a Eurail vacation and plan to do some sightseeing, take a look at some of the lesser-know sightseeing areas between visits to the Leaning Tower of Pisa or the Cliffs of Moher and Burren.

Bulgaria

This Eastern European nation rests pleasantly on the western side of the Black Sea. Its capitol, Sofia, features many parks, bars and clubs making it a fun place to stop. It also holds over 250 historical landmarks and culturally valued locations such as museums and theaters. While it may not be approached with the same enthusiasm as cities such as London and Venice, it is one of the most commonly visited locations in Bulgaria. Many areas of Bulgaria are absolutely beautiful but are less likely to be visited on many traditional Eurail trips through Europe. The mountainous terrain is accompanied by a wide array of physical traits, and make for a gorgeous and interesting trip as your train winds its ways through the many various landscapes found within the country. This diversity of landscape provides the best places to see in the county. The Black Sea beaches are wildly popular in the summer, and the many mountains provide great skiing. These factors combine with historical monuments to make Bulgaria an excellent place to visit in Europe on a Eurail vacation.

Portugal

Spain’s next door neighbor often gets overlooked by the many tourism powerhouses in its vicinity. Though smaller, Portugal offers many unique opportunities. Within an hour on a train one can travel from lush, green, vine covered mountains, to rocky, sloping mountains, to a terrain that is on the brink of being considered a desert, and finally end up at a sun filled strip of beach. There aren’t too many places where you can enjoy that much variety in just an hour. Eurail’s tracks through this beautiful nation wind along rivers and past the castles that dot the landscape. These natural wonders compliment historical locations older than Roman times and make the nation of Portugal a wonderful place to visit. A final point of attraction is the Portuguese wine economy that provides for many beautiful and fragrant environments. This small country is truly a stunning place to stay.

Slovenia

Picturesque and friendly nations in both Eastern and Western Europe are great places to enjoy sightseeing; however, an investigation of one of Europe’s centrally located gems should be included in any Eurail vacation as well. Slovenia is one nation that fits that mold. Set between the Alps, the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain this country is able to offer natural attractions such as mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, forests, caves, hills, plains and even thermal springs. There is also the Mediterranean Sea, just in case everything else wasn’t enough. Slovenia is a paradise for those who enjoy the outdoors. There are also many small cities and villages throughout the landscape, and make interesting destinations for anybody seeking cultural experiences. Its capitol Ljubljana is known for its Baroque and Art Nouveau monuments, and provides many significant artistic and other attractions.

Finland

Finland can provide a true haven for tourists in Northern Europe. As a nation it is decidedly modern, with well planned cities and small towns. This makes the nation extremely accessible, and simplifies the travelling process greatly. That, however, is not the only aspect which makes Finland worth visiting; it just makes it much more attractive. Among the things to see in Finland are the northern lights in winter and the midnight sun in summer. The country stretches far enough North that these phenomena are possible to experience firsthand. Another major natural attraction is the nation’s many lakes. Boasting roughly 188,000 lakes, with plenty of corresponding islands, the country is a great place for people who enjoy water sports. It also offers vast expanses of nature outside of its modern cities that have been preserved. This combination of urban and wilderness make Finland a vibrant and diverse place to visit for any Eurail vacationer.

How To Protect Your Belongings On A Eurail Vacation

Protecting both yourself and your belongings on a Eurail vacation can seem like a challenging task at first. Many travelers, carrying only what they will need for the trip, worry that because they are on a train, others have relatively easy access to the places in which their things are stored. Also, most travelers on a train are in one compartment or one train car for extended periods of time, which can result in a feeling of vulnerability. Missing a stop, or getting on the wrong train is a setback, but is usually not a major one.

The most common story is lost luggage, which occurs on just about every kind of transportation. Aside from problems arising during travel, travelers on Eurail should be very careful at stops as well. Although most individuals you will encounter are friendly, there are those who want to take advantage of vacationers. Overall, there are a number of general rules that can be followed to help keep both yourself and your belongings safe while traveling Eurail.

One of the most basic measures to ensure the safety of luggage is simply to pack less. One bag to keep track of is always easier then two. Eurail generally allows for three bags to be taken on a trip. Taking time to fumble through luggage or trying to find a way to carry it all can leave a tourist vulnerable to devious individuals. The fewer bags the better.

Another precaution that can be taken is using a bicycle lock to secure luggage that is in an overhead compartment. This prevents thieves from easy access, and that fact alone will often keep them away. Cable locks probably work the best as they are the most flexible without losing resilience. Another handy tip for avoiding trouble with luggage is to avoid storing things underneath your seat. It can be very easy for somebody to use an umbrella, cane or other such device to commandeer your bag without your knowledge, take what they want, and return it to its place before you even notice. Keeping close guard over bags that must be kept under seats is strongly recommended.

Locking your luggage up is not the only important lock to keep track of. It is a good idea to keep your compartment door locked throughout the evening. Another night time tip is to keep your money on your body while you sleep, and to sleep clothed in case you need to quickly get moving. If you are traveling alone, another way to keep yourself safe is to not listen to music or movies through headphones. Wearing headphones makes you less aware of your surroundings, and sets you apart as a target for pickpockets and other sorts of thieves.

Other methods of protection rely on how you interact with other people. One of the most significant measures is avoiding conversations involving travel plans with other passengers. Con-artists and others who may take advantage of being able to follow you around will listen for people discussing their destinations and means of getting there. These individuals might watch you for a longer period of time in order to find a way to steal from you, or attempt to gain your trust over time and use that trust against you. There are many ways that people who know your plans can take advantage of you. However uncommon this scenario may seem, it is a good idea to be as careful as possible.

There are other, more tangible precautions that you can take as well. Keeping your passport and ticket information close at hand before they need to be presented is a good way to avoid fumbling around in your bags and leaving yourself open to a bad situation. If you already have this information ready, you will prevent many watchers from seeing where you are storing your money and other such documents. This gives you an advantage over a pickpocket. You can also use safety or diaper pins to pin your pockets shut to keep prying hands away. This can make things challenging for you when it comes to getting into your own pocket, but many vacationers feel it is worth the hassle.

There are many things that can go wrong in any travel situation, and many ways in which a traveler can be taken advantage of. However, there are also many ways to remain safe. It can be difficult to constantly focus on not trusting people, and keeping your belongings closely guarded. This is where human instinct comes into play. It’s important to remember that everybody is not trying to con you. As with every other transportation option, there are definitely challenges associated with Eurail travel, but these challenges are not to an extent that travel should be avoided. Instead these concerns indicate that passengers need to be careful when they are enjoying their vacation.

Important Facts About Taxis And Rental Cars In Cuba

For vacationers traveling abroad, if you are in a tourist section, taxis and rental cars are generally very safe. The tropical paradise of Cuba is no different. Taxi and rental car services are most times reliable, however if you find yourself trying to use these services outside of population centers caution needs to be taken. There are nuances to utilizing both taxis and rental cars in Cuba.

Rental cars can be found most commonly in or close to hotels. Other major locations for rental dealerships can be found near drop-off points of cruise ships and at airports. Finding locations from which to rent vehicles can be simple, however finding a reliable service can be a challenge. Situations have occurred in which patrons have had difficulty receiving the same vehicle that they reserved ahead of time. In many cases the rental company will try to give any car available to the renter, not just the one which was preferred.

Another issue which can arise with the rental car system involves traveling with young children. Many vacationers have found that it can be difficult to find a reliable source of children’s seats. It is recommended to bring your own booster seat for the car if it is at all possible.

Beyond these situations, the system of car rental is very good in Cuba. The taxi system works similarly well. The most significant threat can come from unregistered taxis. In many instances the travelers may have to negotiate price, and price negotiations can be tricky. Care should be taken, because the traveler has a significant risk of being ripped off. It is also possible to end up with rather uncomfortable travel situations if one tries too hard to find the more economic rates. However, as mentioned before, these flaws are limited, and easily overcome by the positive aspects of Cuba’s taxi system.

One primary upside of the rental and taxi systems comes as a result of the overall infrastructure of the nation. Cuba has a system of highways that are well paved, at least in relation to other Caribbean countries, and relatively safe for travel. Speed limits are kept well in check allowing for easy travel. Traffic issues can be present in major cities as tourists and citizens crowd to make their way through the streets. While this problem is consistent, the overriding theme in transportation is comparative ease, when compared to other tropical vacation destinations.

Another advantage of using taxis in Cuba comes is the variety of options available. This aspect is especially present in Varadero and Havana. The main alternative to a traditional taxi comes in the form of Coco-taxis. These vehicles are small, three wheeled cabs. These egg shaped vehicles are generally orange or yellow and make basic commutes a unique experience. At first glance they appear slow and insufficient to meet most travel needs, but on the road these cabs move swiftly through the streets. Coco-taxis offer services for a lower price then most taxi companies. The cost is negotiable and paid in advance, and is not a set fare for services.

Other varieties of taxis can be found around Cuba. The most common of these is horse drawn cabs. This rustic means of travel is often accompanied by lanterns after dark, and can provide a very relaxing commute. Many vacationers to Cuba wind up not relying on any transportation service by spending the entirety of their vacation at their resort. Cuba has many modern resorts in which visitors find that they have everything they need in or close by to their hotel.

However, if visitors to Cuba want to soak up the country’s distinct culture and history, they must venture out of the confines of their resort. The taxi and rental car market in Cuba provides a steady service to tourists. All things considered, vacationers can count on these services to get them where they’re going. The variety of ways to get around the tropical island coupled with the overall reliability of the roads makes travelling around Cuba an experience that can be quite rewarding. There are limitations, of course, but these are easily overshadowed by what the Cuban system of rental cars and taxis has to offer.

Packing Essentials For A Cuba Vacation

Besides specific travel documentation, packing for a vacation to Cuba is similar to packing for any other trip to the Caribbean. The United States has an embargo on Cuba which has made it challenging for the average American citizen to vacation there. However, most countries permit their citizens to vacation in Cuba.

Those who venture to the beautiful island of Cuba are in for a treat. A lush, tropical environment, white sand beaches and world class resorts await travelers to this island paradise. On the surface, Cuba resembles many other Caribbean destinations, however, when packing for a trip to Cuba; there are some particulars to keep in mind.

Clothing

Due to the fact that the Cuban climate is relatively warm and humid most of the year, warm clothing will rarely be necessary. However, before you pack only shorts and t-shirts, there are certain conditions to consider. Mosquitoes can be a problem, and while the government takes measures to control the insect population, there is still a minor risk, especially to individuals who may be allergic to insect bites. The quickest solution to this problem is wearing long sleeves, pants, close toed shoes (not sandals) and a hat. Any clothing that is brought for this purpose should be very light in order to keep the wearer cool. Shorts and short sleeves are not entirely useless to people concerned with insect bites; however it is a good idea to bring long sleeves and pants as well as standard beach gear.

It is also a good idea to pack extra clothing for various purposes. Finding replacement clothing if something goes wrong can be challenging in Cuba, and very expensive, depending on where your hotel is located. In Cuba, clothing is extremely valuable to the local population, and a small donation can have a positive impact. That being said, underwear is especially difficult to acquire in Cuba, so make sure you bring a backup pair or two.

Toiletries

Toiletries that should be brought on a vacation to Cuba are no different from toiletries that any traveler would pack before leaving for a Caribbean island. A basic shaving kit and other personal items are a good start. While pharmacies are present in Cuba, they are generally undersupplied. Therefore basics such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant can be very expensive. Quality shampoo and conditioners can be even more challenging to find.

Medicine

When packing for a vacation to a Caribbean island such as Cuba, bring all basic medication that you could possibly need. Medicines such as aspirin or ibuprofen are in short supply in Cuba. In the case of an emergency, supplies can be found, but it is risky to leave home without any medicine you may need. If you do happen to locate medicine in Cuba, it most likely will be very expensive. Bringing an ample supply of your own medicine is the best way to approach this situation.

Prescription medicine is certainly an item you will not want to leave home without. Be sure to bring any prescription medicine that you have been given from a doctor. Filling prescriptions while in Cuba can be extremely difficult. Other important medicinal items are sunscreen and insect repellant. Forgetting these items can lead to significant discomfort, and just put a damper on your trip in general. A basic first aid kit will also come in handy. Supplies can be low, and having your own can be beneficial. As medicine is in short supply, extra supplies to be donated are always appreciated.

Electronics

Batteries are also expensive and can be difficult to find in Cuba. Due to this fact it is a good idea to bring plenty of batteries for any electronic devices you need. Film, used a lot less with the advent of digital cameras, is also challenging to acquire in Cuba. Possibly the greatest necessity when travelling to Cuba is an adapter for outlets. Most Cuban outlets are not set to the American standard.

Security and Identity Items

Proper documentation is extremely important when traveling to Cuba. Keeping a copy of your passport with you at all times is crucial. Officials are likely to stop travelers on the street and check identification. It can be dangerous to carry one’s actual passport as a pickpocket can create major problems for repatriation. The best way to protect your passport is probably keeping it in the hotel safe. Make copies to carry on your person in case you are stopped. Keeping emergency phone numbers on you can also be helpful in the event that you are somehow indisposed. Plenty of cash also will come in handy. Cuba is a very safe destination for vacationers; however basic precautions should be taken.

Why Cuba Is One Of The Safest Travel Destinations

Cuba is a very safe place to vacation. One characteristic that profoundly affects the overall safety of the nation is the environment of the cities. As a general rule, travelers and Cuban citizens can enjoy an equal amount of security on the streets. This stands in contrast to most nations in which tourists are often targeted because of how much they stand out, and the assumption that some wealth surrounds them since they are capable of travelling. Another major aspect of safety on the streets of Cuba is the presence of police. In the average city, a police officer of some variety can be found with relative ease in the case of an emergency. This aspect of protection is only increased in popular tourist locations in which security officials can often be found only a block away.

Still, there are some concerns. Similar to many other vacation destinations, purse snatching and mugging can occur. Pickpockets are present in Cuba, especially in the more crowded parts of the city. These elements are present in Cuba; however these events are extremely rare by any global standards. For the most part, travelers can move around without worry by employing a small measure of street smarts. As a general rule the greatest concerns of vacationers to Cuba will be artifact peddlers and young people attempting to find employment for rather high prices, as guides.

However safe Cuba’s cities may be, before you arrive in Cuba you will need to be medically prepared. There are no mandatory inoculations, but it is still wise to check to make sure before you go. The most pressing ailment in Cuba is diarrhea. Basic precautions in terms of food and water intake should solve this problem. Antibiotics, in extreme circumstances, could become necessary. There is some risk of rabies, but only if the individual traveling wanders into an environment where animal bites or scratches are likely. Basic vaccinations should be up to date, but there are very few unorthodox medications that are required before traveling to Cuba.

Other common medical precautions that are often required when travelling in the Caribbean are related to mosquitoes. In Cuba there have been outbreaks of Dengue Fever in recent years, but these outbreaks are currently under control. This fever results in flu-like symptoms that may be complicated by shock, and there is no vaccine to fully prevent it. There is currently very low risk of this disease because of significant mosquito control regimens employed by the Cuban government.

There are a few general measures you can take in order to protect you from insects. Wearing long sleeves, long pants, closed toe shoes and hats will provide the most basic protection. Insect repellents are also effective. It is important to note that repellents with higher concentration of DEET will provide longer lasting protection, but will also have a higher potential of releasing toxins into the body. DEET should be avoided for young children since allergies are possible. Other basic precautions include keeping unscreened windows shut at night and using a bed-net. These measures are very commonly expected in tropical regions, and Cuba’s restrictions are generally less stringent then those of other nations.

If something does go wrong medically, Cuba has what is required to meet all needs outside of major emergencies. The government has set up a system of hospitals and pharmacies under the name "Servimed." While this system is often short on beds and supplies, it can provide for pressing needs. In the case of emergencies, medical evacuation to a country with state-of-the-art facilities is available. Overall, these services are much more adequate than those available in most Caribbean locations.

By following basic instructions, Cuba can be a very safe place to travel. Public transportation systems designed for tourists further reinforce this notion. There are buses designed for tourists that meet international standards, and registered taxis that are very reliable. Travelers need to be wary of unregistered taxis, as they can often be a ploy used by thieves, but overall the taxi system is very reliable. Getting around is generally something that can be done without too much extraneous effort. One point that does need to be considered is driving outside of urban areas at night. While major highways are well made, they lack lights, and rural roads are generally worse. This problem can be easily avoided by simply traveling during the daylight hours.

Cuba overall is a very safe place to travel. There is little crime in the cities, and safe public transportation is often available. The medical system is designed somewhat to cater to tourists, and allows for enough protection that travelers can depend on it. The most attractive point, in many ways, is the medical accessibility of the area. Major vaccinations and other such precautions are not significant. This factor along with other safety precautions makes Cuba a safe place to spend a vacation.

Japan - what to see and the best way to travel

In my capacity as the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours Limited, I am often asked all kinds of travel questions.
A client recently enquired about travelling to Japan for the first time and wanted my advice on what to see and the best way to travel when visiting this remarkable land. Here are my tips....

Because only 30% of this beautiful country is inhabitable, as you can imagine everyone is packed into these small areas so the public transport has to be good!
I found that one of the better ways to get around was on the Japanese Rail (JR) system. You will have to book a rail pass for this facility before leaving home to start your journey, up to 3 months before you plan on travelling.

Once you have activated your pass, you will be free to travel almost anywhere in Japan.

The interesting thing about this method of travelling is that the trains are never late and although they can become very crowded at peak times it is a very efficient way to get from A to B. There are specific carriage numbers on the platforms where the trains stop at precisely when they pull in at the stations. There are even colour coded lines on the floors of the station that lead you to the train that you need to catch. The whole system is designed with the customers requirements in mind.

The Japanese are a very respectful race and some of the rules that they display in their carriages are most welcoming and amusing when you compare them to our own rules in England.

For example you are advised not to play loud music, take up more space than is necessary or talk on a mobile phone all things that are freely ignored on our trains!

The bullet train was a really effective way to cover long distances in a relatively short space of time. It was refreshing to see the uniformed staff all lined up on the platforms embarking on the trains, giving them a thorough but quick clean before the next passengers got on.

It is quite impressive to watch these magnificent works of technology zooming through the stations and then to see one slowing down with its sleek design commanding attention.

You can manoeuvre the seats that all face one way if there is more than 2 in your group so that you can all sit facing one another.

Refreshments are bought to your carriage many times throughout your journey to ensure that you have all that you require.

The down side though is that you can still smoke in designated carriages in Japan and if you do not note this when you are reserving your seats, which you can do for your entire stay when you activate your pass, you could be stuck in a smoke filled environment for your whole journey.

You don’t really feel the speed that you are travelling at but it is quite an achievement to cover such distances in such a short passage of time, opening up the whole of Japan to you even if you are only visiting for a week.

The only problem that I genuinely had with getting used to the whole system, was when I reached the station that led back to my hotel, because there were so many exits, I never came out at the same place twice! More of a bad judgement on my behalf I would say. I do think however that I finally found the correct exit the day before I was scheduled to leave after 9 days!

As you can imagine the roads in the major towns and cities are generally very busy and slow moving, so travelling by train is the best way to go when in Japan.

Airplane Charter

The air charter industry began as corporate air charter. Private air charter now is used by many others as well. There are individuals, business executives, sports teams and entertainers that use it. Airplane charter also is used for cargo, freight, air ambulance and organ donation flights.

This type of flying is known by a few other names, such as air taxi, jet charter and executive charter. Whatever you want to call it, it is all the same thing.

Air charter has many of the benefits of airplane ownership, but without all of the costs. There are several methods. The traditional method is on demand charter. That method is a pay as you go system. As the person chartering the flight, you book an airplane to take you from one place to another. You either pay before your flight or afterward. Aircraft charter rates can vary, so it definitely is worth taking the time to search for a better price. You are able to reserve your flight using either a local charter flight operator or one of the many air charter brokers who operate nationally.

Jet cards are another option. They serve as flight debit cards. First you need to put down a couple of hundred thousand dollars. After you do so you will get to fly on a certain type of airplane for a predetermined number of flight hours. If you do not use all of your flight hours by their expiration date, they will expire or you will get a refund for your unused balance.

Fractional ownership programs also have become popular. With those you will own an interest in an airplane or a type of aircraft, along with a few other people. The shared aircraft are owned by the air charter companies. Those companies will maintain the airplanes and provide the pilots, flight crews and catering for you.

In fractional ownership programs you will purchase an exact share, which usually will be somewhere from 1/16 to 1/2. That purchase will get you the usage of an aircraft for a predetermined number of flight hours. The usual minimum number of hours is about 50 per year. In addition, you will have to pay for each of your flight hours. On top of that you will pay for fuel and flight fees.

Today jet charter planes come in a wide variety of different sizes. The larger jet planes are called heavy jets. There are other jets called medium jets and light jets. The smallest jet today is the very light jet, which usually is called a VLJ. If you decide that jet flights are going to cost more than you want to spend, you always can decide to become a fractional owner of a single-engine piston airplane instead.

If you plan a shorter trip, then a helicopter charter might be right. The aircraft charter service has grown rapidly in recent years with the vast spread of the Internet. Now the information on the locations and availability of different aircraft is accessible nationally. Instead of your having just a few yellow pages choices, you now can go online or can let one of the air charter brokers find a flight for you.

Seattle is a city, where one would love to spend more than just a short span of a holiday and give more time to oneself to enjoy the beauty of the city. Accommodation in a stranger city is always a concern, but thanks to Seattle hotels, the visitors to the ‘Emerald City’ need not bother much about those issues. One wouldn’t have missed the praises of Seattle hotels (along with Seattle city) from a just-returned friend or a colleague from Seattle.

The Seattle hotels are scattered in almost every corner of the city, however the preferences of individuals should decide better about the choice amongst the Seattle hotels. The downtown area of the Seattle city is where the most of the activities and nightlife is concentrated. For the ‘nighthawks’ and for the socialites, the Seattle hotels of the downtown area should be ideal to snuggle down. Hotel Monaca, the Washington hotel and the boutiques Seattle are few immediate names that pop-up on the list of the Seattle hotels in the downtown area. These can be categorized into being the luxury Seattle hotels. No worries for those on a stringent budget. Several economic Seattle hotels sprawl over downtown too. The services provided by the Seattle hotels are of fine standards and have few complimentary goodies in store for their customers too. Lodges, motels and guesthouses are supplementary to the Seattle hotels and can be considered as a second option. The Seattle hotels in the other parts of the city can be opted by the not-so-social visitors or those who worship the beauty of silence, or honeymooners craving for some cozy, all-alone time.

It would be beneficial to the readers to list some Seattle hotels and their prices.
•‘Grand Hyatt Seattle’ is a luxurious hotel, ideal for honeymooners. Rated high on the popularity charts this Seattle hotel costs $340 for a room.
•‘Hotel 1000’ is another in the list of luxury Seattle hotels that boasts of a great location along with excellent services, all for $324 of one’s budget.

•‘Silver Cloud Hotel’ which offers rooms for $194 odd bucks, should be another economic option among the various Seattle hotels.

Prior reservation of the Seattle hotels is advisable to avoid last-minute hassles.

The blessing of the grapes

Most of us can recall people who would refuse to eat grapes until a priest blessed the fruit. There is a day in the year when people buy the grapes before going to the church because on this special day grapes enter the church as “forbidden fruit” and leave it blessed. This festival is a mixture of celestial and terrestrial, solemnity and familiarity, tradition and modernity.

In August Armenian Apostolic Church with great exultation and sublimity is celebrating the feast Assumption of the Virgin Mary -The blessing of grapes. It is forth of five major feasts of the Armenian Church Calendar and the most ancient- dedicated to St. Mary. Each year on the Sunday closest to the date of August 15, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary, the Holy Mother of God.
In August, since in pagan times, Armenians have been celebrating Navasard with grandeur (New Year holiday), nowadays the feast of Assumption of Holy Virgin celebrated in the same period has particularly inherited some individual features. In August grapes ripen and the festivals of Navasard have been continued with the blessing of grapes. The first blessed harvest was being sacrificed to Goddess Anahit- patroness of fecundity and maternity.

The night before the ceremony pious people abided by their faith come to the church to sing religious songs and sleep inside the sacred walls. In the early morning with the sunrise they were getting ready for the celebration- animal sacrifices, sweets and infinite quantity of fruits accompanied by songs, dances and funny games.
During the grape blessing God is asked for benediction over the grape pits and people enjoy the fruits of it to be mentally and physically healthy and worthy of atonement.
God is asked to bless people who bring the grape as well.

On the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary, the Ceremony of the Blessing of the Grapes is conducted, and the harvest for the entire year is blessed on that day.

Grapes do have a certain Christian symbolic significance, but for our ancestors it was a symbol of labor and recreation. Through the blessing, grape got divine significance. Our clergymen had chosen grape for benediction since Christ blessed the wine made from grapes and gave it to his disciples as a symbol of his vital blood. Thus work, pleasure and worship were all brought together in this ceremony. The same blessed grape would become blessed wine, and from that very grape people preserved a bit for the next year grape blessing ceremony as a sign of richness and abundance.

The details concerning Holy Mary’s life as well as the story of Assumption have been preserved and passed to us through the Holy and Sacred Tradition of the Apostolic Church.

Following the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the Holy Virgin remains in Jerusalem, and lives under the care of St. John the Evangelist. For nearly 12 years, St. Mary lives by praying, fasting, and often visiting the empty tomb of her beloved Son. During one such visit to the tomb, the Archangel Gabriel appears and gives her the news of her imminent assumption to heaven. St. Mary relays the news to her relatives and all Christians, asking them to bury her in the valley of Gethsemane. St. Mary also asks the Apostle John to celebrate a Divine Liturgy, so she may receive Holy Communion one final time. After receiving Holy Communion, St. Mary returns to her room. As the Apostles prepare to mourn her death, St. John asks the Mother of God to leave an image of her face on a board of wood. St. Mary takes the board, crosses herself and brings it close to her face. Moistening the board with her tears, she asks God that by means of the board, people would be cured from disease. As the Apostles surround St. Mary, an indescribable light appears. The Son of God and the angels of heaven appear in the room. Seeing Christ, St. Mary dies.
St. Bartholomew the Apostle was absent and did not participate in the burial service of St. Mary. Upon his return to Jerusalem, he wishes to see St. Mary for the last time. Per his request, the Apostles open the tomb, yet they do not find the remains of St. Mary. According to His promise, Jesus Christ had delivered His mother to His heavenly kingdom. The Apostles give the board of St. Mary to St. Bartholomew for consolation.
According to Moses of Khoren, St. Bartholomew brings the board to Armenia. It is kept in the Province of Andzav, in a location called Darbnots. Years later, a church is built there in honor of St. Mary, and a convent is opened.

The symbol of this festivity is the idea of maternity full of faith, love and hope.

On coming Monday after the blessing of grapes we commemorate all dead.

After the ceremony you could experience an unforgettable instants of your lifetime filling up the baskets with grapes and drive to a cellar, where you could mix the blessed grapes with those in barrel, see and take part in wine making process pressing the grapes in the old fashioned way, bare feet.

Seattle city guide- A ride through Seattle city

Any Seattle city guide, will always kick-off by referring to the nickname entitled to Seattle city- ‘the emerald city’. The emerald like greenery spawning in the surrounding area should corroborate the words of the Seattle city guide.

Any Seattle city guide, will always kick-off by referring to the nickname entitled to Seattle city- ‘the emerald city’. The emerald like greenery spawning in the surrounding area should corroborate the words of the Seattle city guide. Seattle, a coastal city (yes, it harbors a port too) of the United States, is located in the State of Washington and is also the largest city in the Pacific North-west region of the U.S. Geographically, Seattle city is located between ‘Puget Sound’ (an arm of the vast pacific ocean) and Lake Washington. The Canada-U.S border is around ninety-six miles away from Seattle city.

Taking a break from the altitudes and longitudes of Seattle city, it would be better if the Seattle city guide hits on a venture around the city. Firstly, the ‘Space Needle’ should undoubtedly top the Seattle city guide into being the most recognizable landmark in the city. The logo of the T.V series ‘Frasier’ or the backgrounds of a T.V series ‘Grey’s anatomy’ and another named ‘Icarly’ should help one in envisaging ‘the space needle’, or perhaps sweet memories of the movie ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ should help more. Seattle center, surrounding the ‘Space needle’ is a host venue to several civic events along with few cultural extravaganzas like ‘folklife’ and ‘bite of the Seattle’. Few of the other important landmarks of the city which ought to be mentioned in the Seattle city guide are: The Columbia center, which stands tall with 76 storeys to be the tallest building in the North in the Pacific Northwest, the ‘Washington Manual tower’, which is Seattle’s second tallest skyscraper, the Fremont Troll, the Seattle Central Library, the experience music project, the Pike Place Market and the Starbucks Center (the largest building by volume).

Seattle city guide can’t just be complete by listing few skyscrapers of the city. Seattle city, also called the ‘Rainy city’ has much more to offer. The ambience around the countryside of Seattle city, where greenery abodes in all forms possible, is much more beautiful than the description provided by any Seattle city guide! A glance to the volcanic (yet a marvelous treat to eyes) Cascade Range in the east during early mornings should be an ideal start to any day. The picturesque views that the city offers is something a Seattle city guide can’t miss on. Queen Anne hill, the downtown Seattle skyline, the Elliot bay and the Lake Union views from the Space needle can be rightly called (by this Seattle city guide at least) a picture perfect scenery. The beauty of the Seattle waterfront across the Eliot bay, viewed from the Alki point, compels any Seattle city guide to mention its name in it. Lake Union, typically famous for the umpteen houseboats around has seaplanes, ships spread through along with sail boats and all the amazing utilities of water sports for enthusiasts.

The climate of Seattle is mild and wet in winters and is quite dry in summers. It rains for around 225 days in a year in Seattle. The population here ranks 23rd in U.S and is increasing every year, thanks to the opportunities and jobs available in the city that entices people. A line from the title song of a T.V series which goes like “The greenest green you ever seen, in Seattle’, probably sums up the entirety of a Seattle city guide.

Red Hot Cancun Nightlife

During the day its hot sun and hot sand, but at night its the Cancun Nightlife thats hot, with some of these Cancun Clubs well known all over the world.

So while your hotel may offer live music, and freebie drinks, you will miss out on the main action if you do not get out and visit 1 or 2 or these clubs, to check out the Cancun nightlife.

Senor Frogs (Km 9.5) is a restaurant by day and a disco by night, after 11 pm it changes to a bar and dance club with a capacity for about 1500.

Senor Frogs bar staff keep things moving with contests, routines, and karaoke, while reggae music alternates with the latest hot DJ tunes to keep the throng swaying.

Senor Frogs is a very visual place, with funky out-of-place objects, its amphibian frontman, great lighting effects and amazing graphics.

Dady'O has DJs backed by great light and sound shows that make sure the crowds stay happy all night long, and keep this place near the top of the Cancun nightlife list, and makes this a must visit place.

Thursday night is Miss Hawaiian Night at Dady'O and Friday night its back to the 80s and 90s with all your dance and party oldies

Cancun nightlife has given birth to the Dady Rock Bar and Grill, which I rate as one of the best, with live music, open bar, buffet dining, and dancing.

At Dady Rock Tuesday night is the hot legs contest, Thursday night is ultra popular with its *Wet Body Contest*, and ladies, you get your turn on Sunday when its the *Hot Male Contest*.

One of the newer Cancun Nightlife clubs is the Bulldog, with 3 levels and a huge stage for the live acts, which tend to lean more to the Rock side of things, but they also go into salsa, hip-hop and of course, the latest chart stuff as well.

The Bulldog is a pretty big place and can cater for about 2000 people and offers a fantastic light and sound show to keep the Cancun party crowd moving.

There are a couple of options on the Bulldogs door, you can opt for the *All You Can Drink" or just go by the glass, and they will also cater for large private parties and their food ain't bad either.

Coco Bongo, this award winning Cancun Club has featured in several magazines including Rolling Stone and Playboy, and I think it was called *the planets ultimate nightclub* on CNN, go figure.

Coco Bongo is a multi level venue that holds about 1800, and its a get up and bop type of place, and caters for just about every type of music taste as well, with DJs grinding out Rock & Roll, Trance, Pop, Dance music, 70’s & 80’s, Techno, and the Hispanic Billboard.

You may have to wait in line for entrance to Coco Bongo but with a dazzling light show, and huge video screens blazing through the soap bubbles and balloons, it is definitely worth the hassle and cost, as this Cancun Club Hotspot will cost you between $40 and $50 for entrance depending on which night it is.

The City is possibly the newest and most advanced of the Cancun clubs, this is a 3 level club, lounge, restaurant, and beach club, that does quite a bit of hosting for MTV, with a sprawling complex, providing a non-stop venue, with a cost of about $40 for entrance.

When you take a look at the hotel prices in London, you will certainly be shocked at how expensive things are in London. So, if you are planning to visit or stay in London, use vacation rentals in order to save a good amount of money. Before you lease the apartment, you will have to tell the land lord your period of stay. It could be three days, one week, a month or longer. You will pay a lump sum amount that will cover your entire period of stay.

London vacation rentals offer various options to tourists like you. The apartments are available with one bed room, two bed rooms and even three bed rooms. That is not all what these vacation rentals have to offer, other than the modern and contemporary apartments, classic buildings and traditional properties are also available for rent. Another advantage of the London vacation rentals is that they are located right in the center of the city. New Zealand Travel

Land of the Long White Cloud or in Maori language – Aotearoa.

So you would like to visit it for a getaway – short or long? New Zealand is a getaway from the rest of the world for a short time if you go for a break or a longer one if you choose to live there.

Two long islands one on top of each other and a smaller island at the bottom end make it truly the Land of the Long White Cloud. It has numerous smaller islands off the coast which are delightful to visit being relatively untouched.

Having a long reach longitudinally it covers a wide spectrum of climate and terrain from semi-tropical in the north as it reaches the Pacific Islands to the cold and Antarctica in the south.

The North Island gives you oranges, glorious white and black sand beaches, beautiful ocean and sea wildlife. You experience Ninety Mile Beach and Hot Water Beach. Yes hot water seeps up to meet your toes as you dig them into the sand because the North Island has a large section of the island that is volcanic with volcanoes, geysers, hot mud pools plopping like boiling chocolate. What a relaxation to let your body sink into the warm natural mineral water!

In winter the volcanic turns to ski resorts, Ruapehu being the main one. The North Island also supports acres of rolling green pasture where most of the famous New Zealand butter and milk come from. These pastures were the setting for Hobbiton in " The Lord of The Rings" epic movies.

In the more mountainous areas you can visit breathtaking waterfalls, swim in mountain streams and rivers and yes, even drink the water. Have you ever really tasted pure cold mountain water?

The North Island also reveals wonderful caves and rock formations like the famous Waitomo glow worm caves and the colors of the rock terraces .What makes the Huka Falls so blue?

One of the joys of New Zealand travel is long, wide-open roads where you can travel miles without meeting another car.

Traveling further south we hit windy Wellington at the bottom of the North Island and on into the piece of the Pacific that cuts the islands apart – Cook Strait. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand but not the biggest city. Auckland takes that title towards the top of the North Island. Also called The City of Sails. You will see many yachts and meet a diverse ethnic in Auckland.

These vocational apartments enable you to acquaint yourself with the unspoiled and conventional London.

The peace and comfort offered by London’s vacation apartments is in no way less than that offered in a central hotel. Towels and beds are made before you enter your vacation apartment.

Music players and cable network is also in running condition. In contrast to London hotels, your handpicked vacation apartment will offer you informality, warmth and the convenience of your own home. The stiff and more then formal standard of living offered in central hotels of London pushes most of the guests to leave soon.

Vacation apartments are fully secure since a doorman and a watchman are on their duties round the clock. Living in a vacation apartment will facilitate you to accustom yourself with the traditional pubs and cafes of London. If you are visiting London with your family and want to enjoy some peaceful holidays, vacation apartment of London is the best place to reside in.

Before you leave from home, you should know where you want to stay in London. Once you reach the city, you will find brochures and pamphlets of vacation apartments on the station. Pick a few and give them a rough reading. Choose the one that suits your location and budget.

Generally there is no issue regarding the availability of vacation apartments. If you want to stay on the safe side, make a reservation before leaving for London. Browse the internet, search in magazines and watch TV promotions to get a better understanding of prices and facilities. Select the ones that lie in the location you have chosen and then rate them down according to the rents and facilities they offer. The second way to choose a vacation apartment in London is to hire a guide because as soon as you enter London, your guide arrives there to help.

Sarasota Vacation Rentals – Rent the Good Life

Sarasota vacation rentals are a great way to experience all of Sarasota without the price tag associated with an extended hotel stay.

Don’t confuse a vacation rental with a timeshare.

First, if you’ve never heard of a vacation rental it’s a term used to describe an apartment or home, usually fully furnished, that is rented out on a short term basis to vacationers. The renter stays for a designated time decided on between the renter and property owner. Also, the dwelling is not for sale to the vacationer. The owner or property manager is responsible for the property not the renter. Some of the nice perks of a vacation rental are, there is no need to tip, less expensive than an extended hotel stay, more space and greater privacy.

A timeshare on the other hand is an actual piece of real estate, similar to a fully furnished apartment, which you buy a share of and use during your designated time. You can re-sell your share if you should choose to and you along with the other owners are responsible for the unit.

A nice trip to Sarasota, on the Gulf coast of Florida, allows you the opportunity to experience a truly great destination along with excellent Sarasota vacation rentals.

Sarasota vacation rentals will allow you to experience the class and culture in a wonderful city of islands. Siesta Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key and Longboat Key along with several barrier islands are all islands that form the part of Florida that is officially considered Sarasota.

Once you have taken advantage of one of the many Sarasota Vacation rentals it’s time to take in the sites and attractions that brought you here. It may come as a surprise but Sarasota is actually one of culture centers of Florida.

In the area is the Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall along with the annual Asolo Theatre Festival. You can take a short trio and see rare flowers at the Marie Selby Botanical Garden or take in some marine life without getting wet at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium which features a nice display of Sharks. The city of Sarasota also boasts many four Star resorts, restaurants, and upscale shops for a vacationer to visit.

If beaches are your thing you can get you can find many Sarasota vacation rentals on either Siesta Key or Lido Key, two of the barrier islands, that are world famous for their white sandy beaches.

Take a chance, break your comfort zone and decide on your taking your fist vacation with a vacation rental in Sarasota. I promise it will be an experience you won’t forget.

All aboard the Marrakech Express

Marrakech is swiftly becoming the cultural capital of North Africa. Known for beautiful luxury hotels, Morocco also offers a vast range of alternative festivals as well as an active and exciting World Music scene.

Authentic Moroccan Music covers all manner of forms such as Arab, Berber, classical and Chaabi (Moroccan pop). These art forms fall in and out of the Performance Art genre and raconteurs from all over the country often use the music to enhance classic and modern Moroccan stories.

Gnawa music is perhaps the music best to epitomise the Moroccan style. Uniting African, Berber and Arab songs as well as acrobatics, songs can last for over an hour. Gnawa refers to an ethnic group or religious order which, in part, descends from former slaves from sub-Saharan Africa. It is often wrongly presumed to be a “brotherhood” as women are rarely, if ever are involved in the performance music, however this is not the case. A majority of devouts of Gnawa are women, including most of the officiants. It is simply cultural tradition which prohibits women performing the Gnawa music.

Allegedly Moorish slave traders bought the Gnawas for their healing powers and often at night in Djemaa El Fna (“The place of the dead”) which is a square in the centre of Marrakech, they can be seem performing Lilas – all night healing sessions. These are a bit like exorcisms, where the within spirits participants are knowledged and played out through interesting beats and chants. The music forms a remarkable mix of transient castanet, circling double-bass and racing guimbri fused by a trance foundation with additional chants. Like Reggae, Gnawa is easily converted into mainstream music (predominantly trance) and has certain beats and traits which make the music accessible despite its unwesternised heritage.

Despite being branded as a place of extreme opulence with myriad of luxury riads, Morocco has much more to offer. Maison mk, as featured in OK! and the Times, is an affordable and exquisite compromise of authenticity as well as style. With an open roof structure the riad is perfect for listening to the Gnawa performances happening in the square from the comfort of seats. It is best, however, where possible, to experience the music from the square itself. Here the performance awakens all your senses and the sentiment behind the performance music is not lost.

The influence that Gnawa music has had cannot be underestimated, and collaborators such as Randy Western, Don Cherry and Led Zeppelin are a testament to how the music has affected western music.

Marrakech 2008 plays host to many festivals, most notably the Montreux Jazz Festival (http://www.montreuxjazz.com) the annual celebration of world music, in July. It boasts La Ménara and the Bahia Palace as its main venues and the festival has gained a world wide status through memorable contributions from artists such as Bo Diddely, Chuck Berry, Ella Fitzgerald, B.B. King and Herbie Hancock. The Festival began as a Swiss celebration of Jazz but has transformed into a celebration of all world music and The Moroccan version, although more underground, showcases elements of this classic event, including workshops, acoustic concerts and the Montreux Jazz Club.

Marrakech hosts an annual Festival of Folklore at the end of June, which exhibits some performances from the world’s bests Gnawa musicians including M'allem Sam (Mohamed Zourhbat) and M'allem Hmidah (Ahmed Boussou), two masters of the performance. The World Music festival, however, in August perhaps displays the Gnawa performance music best, with workshops as well as spectacular performances of the music.

William Burroughs, renowned writer of the Beat Generation and 1960s cultural commentator, once described the market square in Marrakech as a place “where human potentials are spread out.” In 2008 this still rings true and the sounds of the city seems to grow and change with the potential of the scene as well as the people within them. Flooding contemporary luxury Marrakech riads and intertwining experiences with authenticity, the sound of Gnawa is the sound of Morocco. The festivals celebrating this music are a cultural manifestation of the place and as such can not be missed.

Three Cities For the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Beijing, Qingdao and Hong kong will be the three cities for the 2008 Olympics. The most Olympic events will be held in Beijing, the sailing Competition will be held in Qingdao and the Equestrian Competition will be in Hong kong. When you come to Olympic Games and visit these cities, you can find so many interesting things beside Olympics.

Beijing is a city of amazing contrasts - an ancient capital with some incredible historical sites, and a bustling modern metropolis getting ready to host the 2008 Olympics. In Beijing, those places you should not miss:

The Tiananmen Square- is the largest public square in the world.

Forbidden City-is the largest and the best preserved Imperial Palace in the world.

Temple of Heaven-was built specifically for worship of heaven and prayers for good harvests during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Badaling Great Wall-is China most spectacular sight extending more than 3,700 miles across China and most often visited for China tour. It is one of the best preserved sections and the highest point of the Great Wall;

Summer Palace-is the most splendid imperial garden in China built in 1750.

Hutong Trishaw Tour-you can take the rickshaw to drive through the old walking alleys to see the old living residence. You can also visit the local family to talk with them. This is a very good opportunity for you to have a real understanding of the local people life.

In Beijing, clusters of neighboring "Siheyuan"(Quadrangles), low and gray, make into many small alleys, most of which orderly laid out like a chessboard, running either from south to north or east to west. This sort of alleys is called "Hutong" in Peking dialect. All these alleys are the same. When you are in it, you will find and experience that every alley has something special to talk about, as it is full of life and stories.

While in Hong kong, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful environment of the spectacular islands and country parks. Walking the street here, you may know more about the culture of east and west combined. That is the reason why Hong kong is a city with nickname of Gourmets' Paradise, City with a Passion, the City that Never Sleeps and Land of Limitless delights.

In Hong kong, these places you should not missed:

Victoria Peak- It is one of Hong Kong leading tour destinations, which has breathtaking views of city famous skyline, Victoria Harbour and as well as the romantic South China Sea.

Aberdeen- A harbor area crowded with junks and sampans, where 6,000 people live and work on junks. To get a close-up look at the Aberdeen way of life, you can take a sampan ride.

Repulse Bay- It is the most famous beach of having the highest representative characteristics in Hong Kong by its long and wide beach, clean water, calm tide and gentle wave.

When the lights go down, you head for Lan Kwai Fong, you will get a taste of Hong Kong unique nightlife.

Lan Kwai Fong is an L-shaped, cobble-stoned lane with numerous bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. Visiting on a Friday or Saturday night, you may be overwhelmed by the enormous crowds that fill the streets, with all bars having only standing room. Most language you can hear here is English rather than Cantonese speaking.

The third city to talk about is Qingdao. As a sailing Olympic city, Qingdao is a beautiful seaside city in the southeast of Shandong Province. When you are here, never miss to go those places:

Mt. Laoshan- is different from many famous mountains in China. Lao Mountain rises from the sea level, and has a coast line of 87 kilometers, structuring a wonder on the sea. Take a walk around, with the sea on one side, and lofty stones and precipitous peaks on the other side, both majestic and elegant, you will enjoy those views without feeling to leave.

Taiqing Palace - As the birth place of Laozi, it has more than 140 rooms including Three Gods' Hall, Three Purities' Hall and Three Emperors' Hall. There are five Taiji Palaces as the main buildings, a stone pillar with three cypresses around and many well preserved ancient articles.

The No. 1 Bathing Beach- is located at the Huiquan Beach, it is once the largest bathing beach in Asia. The surrounding mountains and green trees, modern building subtly combined traditional villas form a wonderful scene. The clear water and soft sands contribute to the superior natural conditions of the beach.

What's more, every summer Qingdao hosts the Beer Festival. If you have an opportunity to attend it, you'll see the best of Chinese beer drinking culture at the event. The many performances are sometimes hilarious, such as the beer drinking competition. Who is the fastest one to chug a bottle of Qingdao beer? You will be surprised that it's the ladies who excel at this admirable skill at often times. There are large variety of beer to sample, from all over Asia and Europe, as well as our well known North American brands.

Top 5 Nicaraguan Cigars

What in the world do all of these high-octane megastars have in common? No, they’re not all starring in Mission: Testosterone, this summer’s most muscled blockbuster. But, they do share a unique bond. In fact, they share the same connection with such historically notable folks as Fidel Castro, W.C. Fields, and even King Edward VII.

How could kings, comedians, and revolutionary leaders have anything in common with the Terminator, Rambo, and Braveheart?

It’s simple: They all love a good cigar! No, actually, they all love a great cigar!

And, when it comes to great cigars, arguably there are none better today than those coming from rich soils and humid mountain hillsides of Nicaragua. Long having taken a backseat to the Cuban cigar-making dynasty, Nicaragua is making its mark on the international scene with the finest cigars found anywhere on the planet.

Just like its booming real estate market that has rebounded after natural disasters and political unrest to become one of the best places in the world to invest, the Nicaraguan cigar industry is benefiting and experiencing a renaissance as well. From the center of it cigar revolution in Esteli to Condega and all the way out to the Jalapa Valley, Nicaragua is home to the world’s best cigar makers, tobacco, and established and up-and-coming brands.

With so many great cigars to choose from, the problem for the cigar aficionado and the newbie alike becomes not “How can I find a good Nicaraguan cigar,” but where should I even start? To help you make your way through the jungle landscape of choice, let’s take a look at five all-time favorites.

5. Plasencia Organica Nesticos

Profile: small cigar, mild, but rich taste

Big things come in little packages! The world's first 100% Certified Organic cigar, the Plasencia Organica Nesticos are pure handmade tobacco magic. These little cigars take advantage of Plansencia’s renowned three-year-aged, organically-grown Nicaraguan tobaccos and serve it up in a smoke-able size that allows you to enjoy big cigar flavor even when you don’t have a lot of time.

4. Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970, Robusto Grande.

Profile: strong, robust, earthy, woody, big, heavy-bodied…you get the idea, this cigar ain’t messing around!

This hefty all-Nicaraguan tobacco cigar was crafted to appeal to an American clientele who could no longer puff their favorite Havanas after the Cuban revolution. Let’s just call it like it is: The Robusto Grande is a big daddy of a cigar – both in size and flavor. There’s no getting around the fact that it packs a seriously rich blow with that characteristic Nicaraguan metallic twang. If you like your cigars to knock you out with a power-packed punch, this is your choice.

3. Felipe II Fat Boy

Profile: medium-bodied, earthy, spicy coffee bean aromas, roasted butter finish

Rated 90 by Cigar Aficionado, this ridiculously rich tasting cigar by Felipe Gregorio is definitely round and robust, but has a seamlessly smooth quality that makes it a definite contender. The Fat Boy’s small, but stocky size (3.5 x 55) gives it a definite “Don’t Mess with Me” attitude. When you’re feeling like a fine fatty at a reasonable rate, find yourself a Felipe II and get ready for a taste explosion.

2. Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series

Profile: medium to full-bodied, long finish, perfectly balanced.

If you want to feel like a celebrity, then you’ll want to take a pull on any cigar from the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series. Made to celebrate their 30th anniversary, this line is crafted from only their best tobaccos and is often quite difficult to find. However, when you do get your hands on one, you’ll experience a masterful cigar from first spark to final ash tap. Despite the price, this is a must-have in your collection.

1. Perdomo Edición de Silvio

Profile: robust, delicate tones, perfection

This exquisite cigar is considered by many to be one of the best in the world bar none. With a secret blend of the finest tobaccos, this is the holy grail of cigars. And, although it is by far the most exclusive (read: expensive) cigar on my list, it’s not to be missed. So, when you start making huge profits with your Nicaraguan real estate investments, you can experience a little decadence with a Perdomo Edicion de Silvio.

As you can quickly see, the Nicaraguan cigar revolution is in full swing – a rich variety of flavors that is unmatched anywhere in the world. With its fascinating history, the Nicaraguan cigar story is one that can’t be missed. When you light up any of the above cigars, you’ll know that you’ve found a new favorite in Nicaragua.

The Top 3 Nicaraguan Playas

“Nicaragua has beaches?” When a friend recently asked me this question, I was shocked! Well known for its steamy, dense jungles and mountain trails, many Americans are just now discovering what is perhaps Nicaragua’s best kept secret: Its breathtaking beaches!

With beaches on both coasts (and many along its numerous lakes and rivers), Nicaragua is a beach lover’s paradise. With over 190 miles of beaches on Pacific Coast and 280 miles on the Caribbean Coast, if it’s fun, sun, and sand you’re after, you really can’t go wrong in Nicaragua. Once you experience a Nicaraguan playa, you might never want to leave…but that’s okay since there’s never been a better time to invest in local real estate than right now.

From white sand to stony shorelines, from lavishly developed to wooden shacks along the shore, there is something for every beach lover in this land of twin coastlines. To make sure you curl your bare toes in softest sand, take a look at my top 3 picks for your perfect piece of paradise.

Montelimar – Luxury at Its Best
One of Nicaragua’s largest and busiest beach resort towns and arguably one of the best places to relax on the Pacific’s white sandy beaches in all of Central America, Montelimar has the finest collection of luxurious resorts, hotels, and casinos – each designed to cater to your every desire.

Whether you are an average Joe or the President of the United States, you can expect to be treated like royalty by a friendly people everywhere – from eating in a fine restaurant or catching up on some much-needed sleep in your hotel room. Service is first rate and accommodations rival those found in the best beach destinations around the world.

If you’re looking for a pampered vacation spot, filled from start to finish with all the rest and relaxation you desire, then Montelimar is the best sandy spot for you.

If you’re looking for activity, Montelimar is for you. From horseback riding, scuba diving, and kayaking, you will find none better in the world. And, if you’re up for hanging ten, the locals can point you in the direction of great surfing hot spots, too.
Indeed, possibilities are endless on this side of paradise, and, if on the rare occasion you do not have a blast, at least you will go home with a nice tan.

La Boquita Beach – Inexpensive, Clean, and Colorful
With its rocky and sandy beaches, La Boquita has earned a sparkling reputation as one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Nicaragua. Located on the Pacific coast, La Boquita is filled with chic hotels, world-class restaurants and bars - offering an all-inclusive vacation experience.

With seafood that is to die for, you could spend your entire vacation eating freshly caught food and dining on the amazing wealth of tropical delights that grow in and about this little slice of heaven.

As an established destination, tourists can feel comfortable knowing that they’ll find the modern amenities you’re looking for and transportation, accommodations, and day-to-day necessities are all easily accessed and enjoyed.

Important: If you cannot tolerate large crowds of people, this is not the place for you, especially around national holidays. But, surprisingly, despite being overrun by a constant stream of tourists, La Boquita is touted as one of the cleanest beaches in the country, and even with the high-class accommodations, you’ll find it’s really inexpensive, too.

Lake Nicaragua
You don’t have to be on the coast to enjoy the beach. Nicaragua is home to many lakes, lagoons, and rivers that offer incredible beach experiences. The most popular lake in Nicaragua is Lago de Nicaragua, or Lake Nicaragua, also known as the Sweet Sea.

Like the country itself, Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in all of Central America. Even though this is a freshwater lake, it still contains an abundance of sea dwellers like sharks, swordfish, and tarpon. Grab your snorkeling gear and get ready for fun (sharks optional)!

When you go to Lake Nicaragua, you must visit Isla de Ometepe. It’s 171 square miles of pure adventure and beauty. Filled with untouched forests, wildlife, and indigenous culture, this island getaway will be unlike any you’ve ever experienced. Hiking in its many amazing forests, you’ll discover monkeys, armadillo, opossum, anteaters, deer, bats, and more. Then, be sure to kick off your sandals, enjoy a papaya or guava juice (with local rum, of course), and take a break on the glorious white sand beaches.

If you’re up for an adventure, aren’t a fan of large crowds, and are ready for a quiet retreat into one of the world’s most beautiful and lush island landscapes, then Isla de Ometepe is a must.

As you can see, Nicaragua is much more than humid rainforests and volcanoes…it’s also a beach lover’s paradise. But, shhhh, don’t let the secret out. Let’s keep it just between us, okay? So, next time you’re planning a sandy vacation (or even a permanent move), put Nicaragua at the top of your list and be sure to visit one of these incredible beach paradises.

Limit List Of Post-launch Loose Lids And Leaks

Have there been times when you have set out from the dock and suddenly realized some problem exists with your boat? By keeping a pre-launch checklist, you may alleviate some annoying problems when it comes to boating! Remember that this type of list is essential for most types of boating craft, even kayaks and rigid inflatable boats. Check your PFD's to make sure they are in good usable condition with no oil stains, mildew, rips or missing parts, etc.

Keep your boat registration and documentation in a resealable plastic bag and store them in a safe place. Always be prepared for a fire and ensure that your fire extinguisher is fully charged and mounted where you can grab it as soon as you absolutely need it. Also, are all of your dock lines in good shape and have you enough of them for every situation? This checklist is not the be-all and end-all of checklists. Power boats and sailboats each need their own list due to obvious differences.

Are you well prepared for an emergency situation? Make sure you have at least three red flares that have not expired. Make sure your running lights and your sound-making device (horn) are all in working condition. Also, are the anchor and the lines in good seaworthy shape? Turn your steering wheel all the way over and back several times to make sure the out drive and rider are responding to the wheel. Check all of your battery connections and water hoses to ensure they are sound and secure. Power boats are no fun when a hose springs a leak in the middle of a lake!

Be sure to check your engine oil level and all fuel lines for any leaks, and of course, make sure there is enough fuel in your tank as well. Is the drain plug in and secure? Of course, if you have a dinghy zodiac there might be several. You would be amazed at what can happen when these are missing or loose! Remember that running the blower to rid your engine of toxic fumes is of utmost importance. After you run your blower for a while, start the engine and check the oil and temperature gauges. After the engine is warm, check them again. And finally, ensure that your boat's shifting system works well by performing the following task. With your boat tied to the dock and the engine at idle speed, put the boat in forward gear and then in reverse to be sure it is working properly. Now, all that is left is, bon voyage!

There Is Never A Wrong Time To Go Boating

Boating is an enjoyable time. Even with the ever increasing cost of fuel these days, although oil is starting to come back down to reality, boating offers a sense of enjoyment on the water you just can not get from land.

Discover Boating is running a funny commercial. I am sure you can check it out on YouTube. The commercial shows people driving in their car and waiving to everyone they see on the streets. The people that are being waived to just ignore them or look at them like they are crazy, as if they are saying, “why in the world would someone be friendly to me on a Tuesday in the middle of the work week?”

The commercial than skips to the same family cruising along in their boat and show them doing the same thing, waiving to people, on the water as they pass by the other boats. Of course the people in the other boats also waive back. If you have ever been on a boat then you already know that this commercial is not sensationalized and is reality.

People on the water respond to others better than they do on land. My theory is because when on the water you are having fun, or at least trying to. With the high cost of gas, congestion, and other factors, driving is not the fun activity it once was, many, and I mean many years ago. Boating however is.

There are a variety of styles and types to choose from and of course that is mainly due to what you intend to use your boat for. Are you going fishing? Want to hit a swimming hole on the river? Maybe you just want to cruise around the big lake. Whatever it is you plan on doing with your boat there is a style out there for you.

First determine what you want to do on the water. For me I love fishing in the Ocean off the Jersey coast in the summer time. Even though they raised the length restrictions on fluke and sea bass, it hasn’t deterred me from going. A fishing boat is perfect for me, with some storage; however I have no need for a galley or sleeping quarters so that helps save on cost. I need speed to get to where I am going as I do not want to spend most of my day taking forever to get where the fish are. There are a variety to choose from such as Great White, Boston, and Trophy. I prefer the Trophy boat specifically their walk around models with the T-top center console.

For my mother-in-law she likes to cruise and take the grand kids to a swimming hole along the Chesapeake. She likes to fish, but it is not a priority. She definitely isn’t spending anytime sleeping over night on the boat, yet needs the room for all the people she wants to bring. Speed is not a factor, but needs enough of it to get where she is going. She chose a pontoon boat made by Princecraft. It gives her everything that I described above and then some.

If you were thinking about getting a boat, there is no real wrong time or right time, although now is better than any because you can pick up used boats practically dirt cheap, at least in my area anyway.

Before plunging into buying a boat make sure you take some Coast Guard certified courses to familiarize yourself with safety procedures and boating regulations. Knowing them will take you a long way in ensuring a fun, safe and enjoyable experience.

If you were wondering if now would be a good time to own a boat given the ever increasing cost of fuel, the quick and simple answer to that question is yes.

The World’s Top 5 Yachts

A Floating Paradise

Yachts have captured the imagination of people the world over and nothing signals luxury more than the ultimate floating home. The term luxury yacht encompasses any privately owned vessel that is professionally crewed and was coined at the beginning of the 20th century when yachting for pleasure became a reality for many.

Classifying yachts into a list of the world’s most impressive vessels is not an easy task. Most people use length as the deciding factor in determining the largest and most spectacular vessels, but in technical terms, it is gross tonnage that really determines one yacht’s size in relation to another. This measure of weight refers to a yacht’s volume and what it can carry or accommodate.

The World’s Five Longest Motor Yachts

But it is length that is more tangible for most people and is a huge determining factor in the status of a yacht. In classifying the world’s privately-owned yachts into the top 5 by length, there are actually six that emerge as clear contenders. The world’s largest yacht is actually yet to be launched and will be vying for the top spot by the end of 2008.

Most of the world’s five longest yachts were built in Europe, with only the Platinum/Golden Star being constructed in the United Arab Emirates. Germany is currently the top yacht producing country with the esteemed Lurssen Company being behind three of the world’s current longest luxury yachts. This trend of European dominance in the field of yachting is also prominent in yacht charters and brokerage. Yacht brokerage companies sell and charter some of the world’s longest and most luxurious yachts, making magnificent vessels of this type more accessible.

The Golden Star

The world’s biggest and most majestic yacht to date, the Golden Star is also known as the Platinum Star and is truly a sight to behold. Launched in Dubai in April 2006, the 160 metre yacht is owned by the Sheikh of Dubai. The yacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei in 1996, but when his funds ran out two years later, construction was halted indefinitely. The partially-finished skeleton of the yacht sat in a German dry dock until the project was taken over by Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai. The name of the yacht as well as her features have been held secret, even after her launch with rumours of submarines and missile detectors neither confirmed nor denied. Originally named the Golden Star, the Sheikh of Dubai is said to prefer the more sophisticated Platinum Star while latest rumours have simply named the current world’s longest yacht the Dubai.

Sunflower

At 155 metres, the Sunflower is the world’s second largest yacht and currently one of its youngest, as it was only launched in 2007. Its design is typically Arabian, even though it was built in Germany, hinting that she may have been built for a Middle Eastern owner and her unique design includes a triple mast and a double funnel. The owner is still unknown but rumours abound that she is the next successor to the Al Said due to her similar colouring and features. The Omani Royal Yacht Al Said is now over 25 years old and was originally built in Italy.

Prince Abdul Aziz

The world’s current third largest yacht was built back in 1984 and actually holds the record of being the biggest ever built in the 20th century. The Prince Abdul Aziz, built for the King of Saudi Arabia, ruled the oceans with the title of the world’s largest yacht for over 20 years until it was usurped by the Platinum/Golden Star. The interior of the yacht was completely redesigned and refitted in Greece in 2002 to create a more modern and luxurious look. Sixty-five crew members are reportedly needed to keep the Prince Abdul Aziz afloat and she more resembles a cruise ship than a privately-owned yacht.

Al Salamah

The Al Salamah is one of the most mysterious yachts currently sailing our seas as very little information about its features has ever been released, leaving rumours to circulate about its incredible design and luxurious touches. Lurssen Yachts in Germany were given only two years to complete the construction of the 139 metre yacht, making its completion a remarkable feat. Owned by Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Saudi Defence Minister and son of the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, the Al Salamah has all the expected features of a yacht of this size, including private cinemas and Jacuzzis, but it is the rumoured extra features that truly set her apart. Her indoor swimming pool covered by a glass roof is unique and her interior was designed by the famed British designer Terence Disdale.

Rising Sun

At 138 metres, the Rising Sun is the world’s fifth longest yacht and encompasses five stories with 82 rooms to house its privileged guests. The yacht cost current owners Larry Ellison, CEO of the Oracle Corporation, and David Geffen over $200 million to build. Constructed by Lurssen in Germany from a Jon Bannenberg design, the Rising Sun has an estimated living space of over 8000 square metres. There are plenty of features to keep guests entertained with a basketball court, gymnasium spa and sauna as well as a giant plasma-screened cinema. The wine cellars ensure that there is always something special on hand to drink and the teak deck and onyx countertops accentuate the luxurious design.

Eclipse – Coming Soon

The buzz surrounding the build of the Eclipse is keeping the yachting fraternity in frantic anticipation awaiting the world’s newest and most spectacular super yacht. Owned by Roman Abromovich and constructed by Blohm and Voss in Germany, the Eclipse has an estimated price tag of over $300 million. Accommodating 24 people, this yacht is built for luxury and privacy, with anti-paparazzi measures and a unique design that separates the owner, guests and crew. The features on board range from two helipads to a disco, pool, and a round glass room offering panoramic views, as well its own private submarine.

The World’s Largest Private Yacht – The Eclipse

The world’s top five yachts better watch out; the Eclipse is set to be launched in 2008 and is likely to quickly sail to the number one spot. Commissioned by Russian billionaire Roman Abromovich, the yacht is unique in its design that prioritises privacy. Abromovich is fiercely protective of his family and private life, especially since his international profile was significantly raised with his purchase of the Chelsea Football Club in 2003. The Eclipse is currently being built by Blohm and Voss in Germany and, while rumours of its length differ, is expected to be the world’s next Super Yacht, possibly even taking over from the Platinum Star as the world’s longest privately-owned yacht.

An Addition to the Abromovich Collection

Russian magnate Roman Abromovich’s $300 000 000 commission of the Eclipse will increase his own private yacht collection to four, turning it into the largest collection in the world. Abromovich already owns the Pelorus, Sussurro and Ecstasea, with each having its own unique, remarkable features. Abromovich also previously owned the Le Grand Bleu yacht which used to hold the title of the world’s largest privately owned vessel. This yacht was presented to Abromovich’s friend Eugene Schivdler in 2006 and is currently for sale again.

The Pelorus is the world’s 11th largest yacht and before the commissioning of the Eclipse was the largest yacht in Abromovich’s collection. The yacht was originally built for another businessman who sold it to Abromovich after one year. The yacht was then modified to its new Russian owner’s specifications, including an additional helipad, increased security and stabilisers. This is Abromovich’s yacht of choice to sail the western Mediterranean and travels down the Suez Canal in winter.

Unbelievable Features

Arrive on board the Eclipse by helicopter and choose to disembark on one of the two helipads that are closest to your quarters. A lift then takes you down the nine stories to your desired location, where no doubt a steward will meet you with a crystal flute of champagne. Each of the 24 guests that can be accommodated on board can enjoy the privacy of their own rooms, with each VIP suite having a balcony from where they can enjoy the fresh air and sublime views. Exciting features like a disco, a cinema, an outside pool, hot tubs, a bar, numerous lounges and even a rounded glass room in the stern which allows for panoramic views are all on offer to entertain guests. If cruising at 25 knots is not adventurous enough for you, there are 20 jet skis, numerous pleasure boats and even a submarine to get guests out on the ocean for some adrenalin-pumping action.

Built for Privacy

The Eclipse marks a new trend in yacht design, with the emphasis shifting to focus on privacy and subtlety. Abromovich is extremely private and his emphasis on security and privacy is sure to attract a multitude of high profile guests to the Eclipse. He is known for his generosity, often lending out his yachts to his Chelsea footballers as rewards or as a honeymoon treat. Because of his protective nature over his children and his celebrity guests, privacy was a large directive for the actual design of the yacht. The enormous central foyer is intended to separate guests, owner and the 30-strong crew for optimal privacy. The owner’s suite is over 5000 square foot and has its own private garden for when the family needs to escape the pressure of entertaining guests.

The unique asset of the 12-seater submarine also adds to the privacy levels of the yacht as, with the docking port being situated in the hull of the boat, guests can come and go in complete privacy. For added security, the entire yacht is fitted with motion sensors and missile detectors, giving guests complete peace of mind. Flashlight sensors have even been installed against paparazzi cameras ensuring the privacy of all those on board.

Luxury Yachting for the Slightly Less Extravagant

The Eclipse sounds like a fantasy straight out of a James Bond film, but the reality is that yachting the Caribbean or Mediterranean in pure luxury is not as impossible as you might think. Incredible yachts like the 271 foot Omega are extremely safe and secure but do not compromise on luxury. All the comforts of a five star hotel are at your finger tips while floating out on the vast blue ocean.

Various yacht brokerage companies offer a range of yachts for purchase and charter. Chartering a yacht through such a broker eliminates any administration involved in owning your own yacht and all your needs can be instantly taken care of. From matching you with the perfect crew to creating your ideal itinerary and route, a yacht broker is the ideal way to plan a yachting vacation. The type of yachts available for charter ranges from enormous Eclipse-like vessels to smaller more intimate crafts meaning that a luxury yachting trip is actually within reach for most people.

Unusual Features On Luxury Yachts

Luxury yachts are the stuff that dreams are made of and some dreams can be more luxurious and exceptional than others. Most yachts offer a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life and enjoy the vastness of the ocean in complete comfort. Features like Jacuzzis, professionally designed interiors and even swimming pools on deck are common and for many people spending time on a yacht are features they will never forget. But there are some yachts that exceed even the most exacting specifications. Features range from anti-paparazzi technology to submarines and become truly unbelievable. With so many incredible extras, it’s no surprise that yachting is such a beloved pastime and has borne witness to so many memorable events.

The Standard Unusual

Yachts are designed to offer a break from the norm for a holiday like no other. Because of their reputation for luxury and opulence many have unbelievable features that, for the yachting fraternity are actually pretty standard. Relaxing in a Jacuzzi or spa bath on deck is part of everyday life onboard a yacht and many vessels also have saunas and steam rooms for guests to relax in after a day at sea. Onboard gyms are not uncommon ensuring that fitness routines can be maintained and many vessels even have personal trainers on staff. Waverunners, jetskis and scuba diving and windsurfing equipment are offered on most vessels, guaranteeing that you can make the most out of the spectacular locations you will be visiting on your yacht.

Interior design aimed specifically at yachts has emerged as a profession and the inside of most vessels is professionally designed to the owner’s unique tastes. Granite countertops and marble columns are not uncommon and wood panelling creates a cosy feel for those stormy nights. Plush carpets underfoot, opulent furnishings and handmade linens allow the interiors to live up to a yacht’s luxurious reputation. Entertainment systems, internet access, multimedia centres and every gadget you could think of are all common features onboard a luxury yacht, ensuring that guests are kept busy no matter the weather. These yachts have become far removed from the rustic explorer vessels they once were and offer every amenity you could need while travelling the open sea.

Yachts That Exceed All Expectation

With standard features of marble and Jacuzzis, yachts really need some unique and incredible features to stand out from one another. One such yacht is the 457 ft Al Salamah. Owned by Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, the Saudi Arabian defence minister, this yacht was crowned the world’s largest state-owned yacht in 2007 and includes features like an indoor swimming pool, a private hospital and over 90 different rooms onboard.

The Omega is a 271 ft luxury yacht for charter and features its own massage parlour and yoga studio, guaranteeing a relaxing cruise. A private beautician is on hand and guests have a choice of relaxing in the interior or in the outdoor Jacuzzi. The Felicita West is a sailing yacht that combines speed with luxury. Even at only 210 ft, this yacht still houses an abundance of unique features, one being the automated crows nest left that transports guests up the mast for a view of a lifetime. The Virginian features its own library and guests can relax in front of a roaring fire, enjoying a book and an after dinner drink. The Octopus has a glass-bottomed floor for observing the ocean life beneath you and a fully equipped music recording studio. Limitless, owned by Leslie Wexner, CEO of Limited Brands and Victoria’s Secret, has its own “dolphin cam” that records the sea life below and transmits it to flat screen TVs across the yacht, while Larry Ellison’s Rising Sun features its own on deck basketball court.

Perhaps one of the most extravagant and unbelievable yachts is the soon to be launched Eclipse. This yacht is set to become the largest privately owned vessel in the world and has two helipads, a lift to transport guests between floors and a disco to entertain through the night. Each guest gets their own jetski and a balcony off their room to enjoy the ocean views. This yacht even has a submarine with its own private docking station, allowing guests to come and go in complete privacy. Privacy and safety were a large consideration in the design and build of this vessel. An anti-missile system, bulletproof glass and motion sensors are all installed and even flash detectors protect guests from the paparazzo’s cameras.

Memorable Events Onboard

With so many incredible features and well-designed interiors, it is no wonder that some of the world’s most important and memorable events occurred on the deck of a yacht. Yachts act as a particularly distinctive status symbol and offer a level of privacy that cannot be achieved anywhere else. This attracts everyone from celebrities to politicians to their decks and is the reason that a yacht has been home to some unforgettable events.

If there is any yacht that epitomises this trend it is the legendary Christina O. Purchased and refurbished by shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1954, it was restored to become the most luxurious and extravagant private yacht of its time. Guests on board made up the A-list of celebrities of the time and ranged from Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor to distinguished royals like King Farouk of Egypt and heads of state like Eva Peron. The now famous Ari’s Bar on board was where Sir Winston Churchill and President John F Kennedy were first brought together to discuss politics and the state of the world. The deck of this spectacular yacht also bore witness to two of the most famous weddings of the mid-20th century - Grace Kelly’s marriage to Prince Rainier and Onassis’ own nuptials with Jackie Kennedy.

Right Boating Equipment

Spending leisure time on the water should be a relaxing experience. Provided you have the right boating equipment to make the excursion safe and convenient. Actually, there are many different things you can add to a boat to insure the safety of everyone on board. And that is while making it easier to the get the boat into and out of the water. Keeping the boat in top condition means more than making it look good. You will want to add of the boating equipment that is well designed to do just what you need.

First equipment you will need is an electric winch. Consider to install this on the vehicle with which the boat will be transported. A manual winch is what usually installed in many trailers to help pull the boat out of the water. However, an electric winch, powered by the battery of the vehicle, can make pulling the boat onto the trailer seem effortless.

Another boating equipment that is useful while trailing the boat is tie-down straps. It is to keep the boat secured to the trailer. Plus you will also need a cover to protect your boat from flying road debris.

Bumpers and ropes are also necessary. Chances are, when using your boat, at some point it will be tied to a dock. Bumpers are useful to protect the outer finish from damage when it rocks against the dock. Ropes, in good condition, helpful to hold your boat to the dock as well as to help direct the boat to the trailer at the end of the day.

Keeping Communication Channel Is Important When You Are On The Water

Setting sail with cloth or a motor can be exhilarating, but staying in touch with the rest of the party, as well as safety services on shore, can be a lifesaver. Radio communications is some of the boating equipment every boat operator should have along with other pieces of marine equipment that can help boaters find their way back to the dock. Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment is one of them. It can help others find you if your radio malfunctions. GPS is considered as an important piece of boating equipment for everyone on the water.

The primary use of the boat, fishing, skiing or simply riding around the lake, determines the type of boating equipment you will need. Extra gas cans, in case you stray longer than originally planned as well as an oar in the event of a break down can help get you back to dry land and help when needed. You might also consider a convertible top for the boat in case bad weather moves in suddenly. This is one piece of boating equipment that can help keep you, and the inside of the boat, dry.

Closing Words

Whatever it is your primary use of your boat, lining up safety equipments over leisure gadgets should be your first priority. Don't be cheap when purchasing them because it could be a difference between coming back home alive or the other way around.

There Are No Blue Book Value Boats

Unfortunately, boats and yachts are not like cars. There is no default way of tracking a boat's price. You can't just look for blue book value boats on-line or at the library, because there is no blue book value of boats. The best you can do is get a good estimate from trusted boat or yacht brokers. Of course, this isn't always the easiest task. Whether you are looking for new or used boats for sale, luxury yachts or repossessed boats, you need to find a broker you know has your best interests at heart. Here are a few suggestions for making sure the broker you find is the right one for you.

First, you shouldn't actually have to pay the broker. You're already going to be paying for the boat! A good broker should be getting a part of the commission that the seller pays its broker to sell the boat. If that doesn't quite make sense, look at it like this: the seller is paying its broker a commission to find someone who can buy the boat. The seller's broker might work with people directly, or it might contact buyer's brokers and pay them a sort of "finder's fee" to handle most of the legwork involved in finding a buyer. One works with the buyer, one works with the seller, and everyone's interests are well protected.

The best brokers are liscensed and bound to a specific code of ethics. Naturally, these might be difficult to find, as Florida and California are currently the only two states that have professional regulations for yacht brokers. Failing this, a background check of the broker's past business practices is a good secondary option. Remember, a boat can be a major investment, and you would want to trust your broker the same way you would want to trust a real estate agent when you are buying a new home.

It also helps if your broker has actually owned a boat and has experience working with one. A broker without hands-on experience might not be able to recognize all the little details that could increase or reduce a boat's value. Remember: blue book value boats don't exist. Your broker is your only estimate of how much a boat is worth, and an inexperienced broker could miss details that could save you hundreds of dollars.

Additionally, it can be beneficial to pre-qualify for a boat loan before you begin shopping for a new or used boat for sale. A well-connected broker could very well be able to put you in touch with marine finance sources, as well as boat or yacht insurance brokers. This can be a big help and give you some extra leverage in negotiations.

In the end, finding the right boat or yacht broker is one of the most important steps in buying a repossessed boat, luxury yacht, or other means of marine travel. Almost, in fact, as important as finding the right boat. There are no blue book value boats, so you have to make do with the best alternate source of information available. Fortunately, a skilled boat trader can not only provide a good estimate of a boat's value, but also invaluable information regarding how to go about buying and even using your new boat.

Yacht Charting Is Fun

Yacht charters have risen greatly in popularity as a holiday activity and add to the excitement of a perfect sunshine getaway. Great for couples looking to get away from the stresses and strains of busy everyday life and also a fantastic way to see different parts of the world up close up and personal with the whole family. There are two types of yacht charting, each one is discussed below.

Bareboat Charting
This is the perfect option if you are an experienced sailor, or someone else in the family knows a lot about yacht charting. This option gives you complete freedom as you can call your own shots and explore the destinations you want as and when you feel like it. It is slightly cheaper than the crewed option and gives you much more flexibility to do what you like.

Crewed Charting
If you choose a crewed charting option it means the yacht company will provide an experienced crew to sail the yacht for you and provide other services. The size of the crew depends on the size of the yacht and how many people are onboard. For example, a small yacht will only require a sailor to navigate the waters on your behalf, but a larger luxury crewed yacht charters may include a skipper, chef, entertainer, deck hands and even a scuba instructor to make your stay on the yacht as pleasurable as possible.

Destinations
The world really is your oyster in the world of yacht charters. There are so many beautiful places in the world waiting to be discovered and explored. The best thing is when you get there, you can decide what you get up to and how long you stay in your destination; it's total freedom to do as you please.

If you do not have the experience to charter a yacht yourself why not get onboard a Mediterranean crewed yacht charters. The Mediterranean is a very popular destination because of the miles of golden beaches and crystal clear shore line offered by destinations such as Croatia's Adriatic, Greece and southern Turkey. The Caribbean is another must see destination for yacht charters, which is why so many people prefer the Caribbean luxury crewed yacht charters. The islands of the Caribbean offer stunning scenery and unforgettable experiences on beautiful islands such as Antigua and the British Virgin Islands.

It is very hard indeed to get bored on a yacht charter as there are so many things to do and see, whether it be onboard or on land. As you arrive at your chosen destinations, you will see the envy in everyone else's eyes as you berth your luxury yacht. Once you get onto land, you decide what you want to do, its total freedom to enjoy the sights and sounds at your own pace. Whether you chose the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bahamas, pacific or even the UK, it's guaranteed to be the trip of a lifetime as you explore the world on a private yacht with your family and friends.

Boating Brings Fun And Enjoyment To Families Of All Ages

One of the great things about boating is that it can be a fun family filled day. Not all boats are made for fishing or racing up and down the river. Take for instance the pontoon boat. It does not matter which manufacturer you choose, the pontoon boat was made so you can have fun.

My mother in law purchased a pontoon boat manufactured by Princecraft about four years ago and I can tell you that she gets the absolute most out of it. She takes her boat out pretty much every weekend.

Last Saturday my wife and I determined our 15 month old son was ready to go for a ride. We already had it set in our minds it would be a quick ride up and down the Elk River in Maryland to get him acclimated to the motion.

So we strapped him into his little life vest made specifically for kids his size and age and away we went. Much to our surprise he absolutely loved it! I was sure he was not going to like it because it might be a bit scary and too different than what he might be used to in a moving vehicle. Shows what I know!

He wasn't crazy about wearing the life vest, but he eventually did get used to it. Once he felt comfortable with the vest, motion and his surroundings he was smiling and laughing as if it were the best thing ever to happen to him. This, of course, brought a smile to our faces. We now know we can go out on the boat every weekend and not worry about needing a babysitter.

Not only were we absolutely thrilled at learning that our son enjoyed boating but because of boating we all can spend a lot of time together as a family with this great activity.

Maybe you were thinking about getting a boat and not sure which one to get. Take a look online because the best tool I have seen on the Internet for determining what you should purchase can be found at DiscoverBoating.

On their website you will find a tool that asks you a series of questions on what you exactly want to do with your boat, such as fishing, racing, swimming etc. After you go through this questionnaire/survey screen, it will narrow down various selections of boats for you.

Once you see the list of boats that accommodate what you are looking for the website will then show you just how much boat you can afford. It is a really neat tool, and I highly recommend using it before you buy a boat. The best part is it doesn't matter if you are buying a new or used boat as it does not take that into account.

Boating is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by everyone in your family. As you can see from ours you can be as young as 15 months and as old as, well, old enough. I won't give away my in laws age just yet.

Tips for a great camping trip

Camping is fun but many people go unprepared and then complain they had a lousy time. To have a great time at a camping trip it is essential to be well prepared. Some of the things that you should be prepared for include:

Mosquitoes. These dastardly insects can ruin your vacation. So take some bug spray or a mosquito net. Dress in bright clothes and use mosquito sprays and candles. While this does not guarantee that you won’t be bitten, but the frequency will be a lot reduced.

Site selection: Choose a camping site away from the water. Mosquitoes like to collect around water puddles and drainage ditches. While open space is great, sometimes the wind can be strong and freeze you at night. Make sure the ground is flat so that water does not collect when it rains.

Dress well. Just too many people go camping dressed in outrageous clothing. Do not wear a suit or brand new clothes to a camp site. Wear old clothes and always bring a jacket. No matter how warm it is during the day, most camp sites feel cold at night. Take extra socks and blankets. You must bring a pair of water proof shoes. Wearing sandals is fine on the beach but if you need to go hiking, you need proper shoes. A hat and sunglasses are not mandatory but they do protect against the sun and the rain. Many people love to wear jeans. But jeans have one minor flaw. When they get wet, they almost never dry up quickly.

Security: Everyday we read about muggings and robberies at camp sites. So keep safety in mind. Know where you are and let others in your family where you plan to be. Keep a phone handy. Be familiar with the surroundings. If you do not know where the park rangers office is, make an attempt to find it. And you must discuss safety issues with your family and children. At night, you must always have safety in mind and have a plan just in case something happens.

Photographs; With the digital cameras available today, there is not too much hassles of ruining a picture. If you take a bad picture, you can immediately view it and delete it and repeat the process again.

Sleeping: If you decide to sleep in a tent, you should generally face away from the wind. The wind not only makes it cold but if there is any smoke from the fire place it will all enter the tent. Sleeping on the hard ground is not fun, so bring a nice sleeping bag which is thick, warm and comfortable.

In most cases, enjoying a camping tip requires a bit of common sense and some degree of prior preparation.

Ways to pass time on a boring camping trip

Camping trips are great fun and we all look forward to them. Prior to the trip, we all prepare, pack and wait anxiously to get in the car and drive. As soon as we get to the camp site, we excitedly take everything out of the car and arrange it in an orderly fashion. Almost without fail, someone will set up the barbecue on, cook something, get the beverages out and we all enjoy a hearty dinner. And all this is done within 2 hours of arriving at the site. And right after the dinner, the excitement just simply disappears and all of wonder when we will go back home.

Even though the beach is not far and there are many people on the beach, sometimes boredom sets in very quickly and many of us wish we had stayed home-and this happens on every camping trip. To avoid a boring trip, there are some things one can do.

Book: Always take a book to read. There is no better way to pass time then to read a great book. Carry a few and you may not even want to come out of the camper.

Go hiking: Sometimes just sitting outside the camper can be dull. So get up early, put on some decent clothes and shoes, carry some water and go explore the surroundings. This is perhaps the best way to enjoy a camping trip. Too many of us never set out more than 20 feet away from the camper to explore the land.

Go skinny dipping. If you are with some friends and not your parents, then perhaps skinny dipping will generate some excitement (and more). If there is a pool or a lake, just take off your clothes and go for a swim. This may not be appropriate depending on your company but it sure is one way to spice up the trip

Fishing: For those who have run out of things to do around the camper, fishing is a great way to have fun. Walk along the beach and see if you can rent a boat. Get a rod and a line (or better still you should have brought one from home). The fishing trip can help you explore the area, see the surrounding and if you are lucky you may even catch something- which you can eat later on.

The best way to prevent boredom at a camping trip is to be prepared before you get there.

Best Beaches - Lanzarote Hits Top List

Just a hundred miles from the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is one of the most popular islands for European holidaymakers, not just for the traditional summer weeks but for winter too, as the weather for the island - often in the 70's even in December and January - make it the ideal destination for tourists from Northern Europe to head to to escape the winter blues.

And being able to relax on the beach and catch some rays over the Christmas and New Year festivities is enough in itself to tempt many to take a holiday in Lanzarote then.

But now a leading internet site has confirmed what many holidaymakers to Lanzarote already knew - that not only are the beaches great but one Lanzarote beach ranks among the best in the world.

The site points out that while Lanzarote is just a hundred miles off Africa, it is Spanish, and describe the locals as 'passionate'.

And of Lanzarote's 90 beaches they say the best one, which ranks among the best in the world, is on the south of the island, at Caleta del Congrio, with an 87 per cent privacy rating.

They also suggest that those who like wind surfing should head for a different Lanzarote beach - the four mile long Famara Beach.

Other areas that were in the top beach list include Barbados, Turkey, Paros in Greece, Loreto in Mexico and Malibu in California.

World class beaches and water sports aren't all that await Lanzarote tourists though. Puerto Del Carmen for example, which is one of the island's most popular towns for holidaymakers, is a hub of excitement for many family activities.

And if the Lanzarote tourist is looking for a sports filled holiday rather than a family one, Puerto Del Carmen offers sports enthusiasts a wide range of activities. Locally owned diving shops often take tourists on amazing underwater adventures to various places around the island. Diving schools are available for those who wish to learn to dive or snorkel.

Windsurfing, swimming, boating, jet skiing and paragliding are also very popular water sports enjoyed by many locals and tourists. Sports enthusiasts also can enjoy golfing, cycling, running, hiking, camping and other local activities, including the Ironman competition.

Costa Teguise, another area favoured by tourists taking holidays in Lanzarote, is the smallest of the three large resorts on the island. It is about 6 miles northeast of the capital city Arrecife. The entire resort is built on former lava fields and saltpans. The resort consists of several apartment blocks, bungalows and villas. Primary attractions are the golf course, a marina, commercial shops and entertainment. Many visitors enjoy the water park in the outskirts of the resort.

Playa Blanca is a quieter area of the island, and often preferred by those who take their Lanzarote holiday in a villa rather than in a hotel.

Once a small fishing port. Playa Blanca is very popular with families due to its size and many family friendly beaches. Two more beaches were recently added to Playa Blanca to help make up for the lack of space on the main central beach. Along the well maintained and manicured streets there are several shops, restaurants and clubs. Lanzarote's Playa Blanca offers many sports and attractions for tourists of all ages.

But above all, if Lanzarote should be a magnet for any particular type of tourist, it has to be the beach lover - there's 90 to choose from including one of the best in the world today!

Spanish Islands Stop 2008 Holiday Slump

In a recent survey by one of the UK's leading retail, holiday and banking groups, Spain looks set to remain a favourite destination for British holidaymakers this year, even though other destinations are proving to be cheaper as the Euro - the currency used by Spain - has increased in value against the British Pound, making Spanish holidays considerably more expensive this year than last.

Until official figures are out, controversy will reign in the travel world with some travel agents claiming that countries who don't have the Euro, such as Turkey, will draw more visitors than Spain this year, while the travel agents own trade organisation say Spain is still number one for British holidaymakers, with the Scottish people especially still choosing Spain above anywhere else.

Holidays in Spain have been popular since the advent of jet travel made overseas holidays possible for the masses, and turned small villages like Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol into the concrete jungle it is today - the worst excesses of tourism are over now thankfully, and the Spanish authorities have strict controls on what can and can't be built in popular holiday resorts along the Spanish coasts.

Tenerife is a prime example of how tourism has changed a holiday destination. From the 1960's onwards Tenerife became a popular destination with winter holidays becoming much more in vogue due to the island's all year round good climate, allowing Tenerife's tourist industry to prosper with year round tourism compared to some areas that have a six month season.

New hotels and housing developments were built without much thought for the environment, but now Tenerife has introduced planning rules that will protect her from future excesses.

The island was once a premier holiday hot spot amongst the elite, but a lack of investment caused it to fade off the holiday destination map. Now, with local leaders pushing for new strategies, Tenerife is making a comeback as the place to be when you want the perfect holiday.

Another Spanish holiday island that is doing well despite talk of a recession is Majorca Spain - popular with European holidaymakers for over 50 years now, and still attracting new and returning tourists who might have been able to get a cheaper destination from their travel agency.

Also known as Mallorca, the island really started to develop as a tourist hot spot as far back as the 1920s. Today, Mallorca sees more than six million visitors each year, yet ninety-five percent of vacationers concentrate in only five percent of its territory. Mallorca is known as the Mediterranean Lady and it offers a little something for everyone.

Like Tenerife, Mallorca is good for year round holidays, but the travel industry has only started winter offers releatively late compared to Tenerife.

Many people actually prefer the slower paced winter holidays to the hustle and bustle of the busy summer holiday season. Temperatures in the winter season range from 6 degrees Celsius (42 degrees Fahrenheit) to 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit). These mild temperatures help make Mallorca the perfect wintertime destination for those who enjoy cooler temperatures and mild winter weather - after all not everyone wants to spend their holidays just sunbathing, though plenty do!

Water sports and golf are very popular in Majorca, and Majorca golf holidays in themselves are a niche travel market. Some local businesses offer dive or boat tours and diving lessons for those who prefer the Mediterranean to dry land. Diving in the Med is an experience like no other. Some species of tropical fish and marine life exist only in this temperate climate. Crystal clear waters offer a great viewing distance. Local businesses also offer boat and water craft rentals for those who wish to explore the open sea on their own.

Mallorca has a very colourful history dating back to the Paleolithic period. It has been under Roman, Byzantine and Spanish rule, and outside of the peak summer months is an ideal time for those interested in culture, art and history to visit the island.

Museums in various villages on Mallorca showcase a wide variety of artefacts from each period of the island's history. The official spoken languages on Mallorca are Catalan and Spanish, but many Mallorcans are becoming fluent in English and German as well, knowing that the tourist industry plays a major part in the island's economy.

Majorca and Tenerife might be a little more expensive this year, but it seems people are willing to pay the price.

How to Plan a Stress-Free Vacation

Planning a vacation can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be: being well prepared can make a big difference, and a little forethought can go a long way. Follow these simple tips to plan a great trip on your terms.

Plan ahead
The overwhelming number of vacation possibilities available in the United States alone can make planning a vacation stressful in and of itself. One way to narrow down your options is to first decide on an overall tone or goal for your trip. Looking for relaxation? Consider renting a cottage by the lake or near the shore. Feeling adventurous? Try a camping and white-water rafting trip. Interested in fun and education? Check out the battlefields of Colonial Williamsburg or head to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Another way to narrow your search is to decide how far you're willing to travel, and work back from there. If you hate flying, plan a trip that's within driving distance. Remember, with careful planning, the route you take to get where you're going might just be half the fun.

Simplify, simplify
Traveling a great distance is no guarantee of a successful vacation. When planning your trip, remember that vacations are about relaxing and enjoying the company of your travel companions after all, you're more likely to create memorable moments if you plan your trip around the people involved, not particular places or activities.

Two words: off season
If your vacation budget is tight, keep in mind that many top vacation spots offer discounted rates outside of peak travel dates. Typically, the off season runs from September through March once the temperature starts to rise, so do the rates. But you don't have to completely rearrange your travel schedule to get a better rate even making minor adjustments, like traveling mid-week as opposed to on the weekend, can help reduce travel costs.

Go local
When traveling, particularly somewhere you've never been, there's no better resource for must-see attractions and great food than the locals. Sure, striking up a conversation with a complete stranger isn't the easiest thing to go, but hey, you're on vacation. Part of the fun of visiting a new place is experiencing its unique culture.

Be prepared
Nothing can ruin a trip faster than some unexpected problem, so it's best to be prepared for anything (that is, anything you can reasonably expect may happen). If you're heading out into the woods on a camping trip, do a little research into the area to make sure you're well aware of the potential dangers, and plan accordingly. This may simply entail packing a snake bite kit, poison ivy cream, or extra water filters. If you're taking a road trip, make sure you have a backup plan in case of a break down or flat tire.

Regardless of where you're headed, it's a good idea to make photocopies of your drivers license, credit cards, proof of insurance, etc. anything that could end your trip prematurely if lost or stolen. Planning ahead will help reduce the risk of facing an unexpected delay, expense or other problem along the way.

Pack light
Vacations are about relaxing and letting go of the day-to-day stresses. Why burden yourself with unnecessary luggage? Airlines are now charging baggage surcharge fees, and extra luggage in the trunk of your vehicle will affect your gas mileage by roughly 2% for each additional 100 lbs. That extra weight will increase the wear and tear on your brakes, too. Plus, carrying around unnecessary weight will likely to drag you down emotionally as well, so take a load off (literally,) and pack light.

Flexibility is key
Regardless of how thoroughly you prepare for your trip, you never know what might happen while you're on vacation. Both good things and bad can take you by surprise it's important to take both in stride. Just because things may not go exactly as planned doesn't mean your trip is ruined. Stay positive, and remember that a vacation is not defined by location, itinerary or even budget. Ultimately, it comes down to attitude. If you plan ahead and remember to relax, you're certain to have a successful vacation, regardless of where you end up.

Italian Skiing 2009 - The Dolomites

Skiers from around Europe and beyond head for Italy when the ski season hits.

The Dolomites are a section of the Alps, located in northeastern Italy. While in the summer and autumn months, the Dolomites are primarily used for mountain climbing, hiking and base jumping, the situation changes in the winter. During the winter months, the Dolomites are a Mecca for international skiing, bringing hundreds of thousands of guests to the country. Year in and year out, this part of the Italian Alps serves as host to novices and experts alike.

The Dolomites get their name from the rock that causes their unique shape and colour. Named after French mineralogist Deodat Gratet de Dolomieu, dolomite is a sedimentary rock mainly formed from carbonate minerals. The molecular properties of the mineral give the mountains their rugged pinnacles and rosy color.

Several towns surrounding the Dolomites feature spectacular ski resorts. In particular, Cortina d'Ampezzo is a resort town with Mediterranean charm. Over fifty ski lifts dot the slopes, and one hundred and forty kilometers of well-groomed ski runs line the mountainside. There are five regions for skiers in Cortina d'Ampezzo, each connected by ski lifts or skibuses. If you're feeling adventurous, there is plenty of room for off piste daredevil skiing. To get to those hard to reach areas of the mountain, heliski services are provided. There is enough excitement for anyone looking to ski on the slopes of the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo. The town even features views of the Olympic ski area from some of the hotels.

Of course, if one ski area isn't enough, you can always purchase a Superski Dolomiti pass, which will grant you access to all 1220 kilometers of ski runs. This means that you can travel to any of the twelve resort areas and check out the slopes yourself. Check out the town of Ortisei, located within the valleys of the mountains. Ski in Alta Badia, where the Alpine Skiing World Cup often takes place. Wherever you chose to go, your access is granted with an all-inclusive pass. Adventure on the mountains until your heart is satisfied - Italy knows that ski holidays are important for her tourist economy and compete directly with both French ski holidays and ski holidays to Andorra

Towns near the mountains offer a combination of old-world charm and modern hospitality, with only the finest customer service. From the servers at the local restaurants to the greeter at the front of the hotel, the people of the Dolomite region are some of the friendliest you will ever encounter. They know that visitors don't come just for the great skiing. Visitors to the Dolomites are looking for fantastic dining and luxurious relaxation.

The resorts surrounding the mountains feature the finest accommodations, as well. Get a suite overlooking the valleys with a hot tub, then relax as you sip great Italian wine and enjoy the serenity of the natural landscape. When you wake up in the morning, get a massage to soothe your tired muscles and prepare for another day on the slopes of Italy's Dolomites.

Andorra - First Class Ski Holiday Paradise

Europe's Pyrenees are known for being a skier's paradise. Located on the borders of Spain and France, they offer skiers some of the best slopes in the world. Though many visitors choose to stay in either Spain or France, there is one more option. For the best in skiing, services and hospitality, the tiny country of Andorra should be your holiday destination. It's got everything that you need at half the price.

Andorra is located in the Pyrenees surrounded by Spain and France. Once an isolated and unknown land, it is now a highly prosperous country because of its tourism industry. At an average of 83.5 years, the people of Andorra claim the highest life expectancy in the world. Because of its position within the mountains, the country doesn't have much in common with the rest of Europe, except for Spain and France. It's gone through many changes over the years, like being occupied by France and declaring war on imperial Germany during World War I.

Today, Andorra enjoys its status as the skiing tourist's hotspot. Nine million visitors come to the country every year to enjoy its slopes and world-class resorts. Its duty-free status is another reason that it has so many visitors, as goods can be purchased much cheaper than in the rest of Europe.

Grandvalira, the largest ski resort in Andorra, is getting more visitors every year. The resort reports an increase of twelve percent this past season over the 2006-7 skiing season. Thanks to an abundance of snowfall and artificial snow creation, the resort opened earlier than usual. This fact combined with great conditions toward the end of the skiing season gave Grandvalira one of its most successful seasons in recent memory.

Soldeu, a popular Andorra ski village, has built more hotels, including some of the top hotels in Andorra

Skiers at the close of the season enjoyed a meter of snowpack and powdered snow. With the snowfall and artificial snow creation the resort was able to maintain 100% percent ski lift use and 95 percent slope use, some of the highest numbers in the Pyrenees region. These conditions kept skiers coming from all around the globe, and a reported 1,512,000 skiers enjoyed the slopes over the course of the season.

Another reason that Grandvalira experienced such an increase in tourist traffic was the celebration of Pas de la Casa's fiftieth anniversary. Pas de la Casa was the original name of the ski resort that was integrated into Grandvalira. To celebrate this, Grandvalira presented a full schedule of events for visitors. They included various sporting events, a skier's statue inauguration, and a week dedicated to the history of the resort's cuisine. Even Mickey Mouse got in on the action by making an appearance at the ski and snowboard school for photos.

In recent years, France and Spain have had their share of tourists, but Andorra has also been a very popular winter destination. From skiing the many kilometers of slopes to shopping for luxury items in duty free shops, the tiny country of Andorra has something for every winter vacationer. Its tiny size makes it ideal for a winter ski holiday.

2008 Diving Holidays In The Canaries

Over a million European holidaymakers visit the Canary Islands each year in search of the perfect island vacation. Inland tours to the Mt. Teide volcano, bike tours of individual islands and boating tours are just a few of the exciting adventures that await in the Canaries.

Due to the location of the Canaries, a winter vacation is just as desirable as one taken in the summer. Water temperatures reach about 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months and 63 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter. Diving during the summer months is often more comfortable in a 7mm semidry suit; however a 5mm wetsuit will suffice any time of year. Some divers prefer a dry suit with hood and gloves during the winter months. The water is warmest from June through October.

Diving in Tenerife

Tenerife's impressive coastline doesn't stop at the water. Like the other islands, underwater visibility is 65 to 100 feet and very impressive. The eruptions that formed the islands a hundred years ago are still evident in the sub-marine landscape. Marine life surrounding Tenerife is much the same as the other islands, and includes scorpionfish, trumpetfish and parrotfish.

Diving in La Palma

Prime diving areas in La Palma include landscapes similar to those in Lanzarote or Tenerife, but La Palma's waters also include an aircraft wreck. Some of the more prominent marine life in La Palma includes the scarlet sea fan, yellow sea fan, triggerfish and black coral.

Diving in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is a favourite dive destination for many divers worldwide. Underwater visibility in the waters around Lanzarote is 65 to 100 feet. Marine life includes angel sharks, moray eels, damselfish, groupers and many others. The occasional hammerhead shark is also known to inhabit the waters of Lanzarote.

Shipwrecks, natural caves and tunnels add to the thrill of diving in Lanzarote - underwater landmarks have been named by various people over the years. During a visit to Lanzarote you may hear diving locations such as the 'cathedral' which is an underwater cave to the left of the Playa de la Barrilla Bay near Puerto del Carmen.

Diving in the Canaries

The mild climate of the islands makes them the perfect location for water sports. Sailing, fishing, diving, yachting and jet skiing are some of the most popular activities enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. In fact, many locally owned rental shops offer everything water sport enthusiasts need for a great island vacation. Any of several dive centers or schools can also help plan your excursion. Dive schools are found on almost all of the Canary Islands. Schools offer classes for every level of diver, from beginner to expert, as well as tour information for each island.

Scuba diving in the shallows is also very popular among tourists who wish to remain closer to dry land, but still want to experience the marine life surrounding the islands. Scuba diving allows beginners or even expert divers the ability to interact with marine life.

Royal Visit Boosts Island Property Prospects

Leaders of over 50 countries from the Commonwealth will be meeting on the Mediterranean island of Malta from November 25 to 27, and for three days the island will be enjoying the attention of hundreds of millions of TV and online news viewers and newspaper readers worldwide.

Malta has often been overlooked by holidaymakers and second home owners in favour of other Mediterranean islands such as Mallorca, Cyprus and Lanzarote, and hotels and estate agents alike on the island are hoping that the three days of publicity will boost visitor numbers for 2006.

With good all year round weather and an English speaking population visitor numbers from the UK, which make up about half of the island’s tourist numbers, have been surprisingly flat in recent years, and with cheaper holidays available in the new destinations from Eastern Europe such as Bulgaria set to capture more of the UK holiday and property market Malta could see tourist numbers remain level or even fall in future years.

Malta Holidays

Malta missed it’s own target of a modest increase in tourists this summer, and there are worries on the island that the opportunity to increase awareness among potential visitors will be missed.

Michael Johnson of Tribune Properties who specialise in properties for sale in Malta comments:

‘Malta is ideally situated in the Mediterranean to attract tourists from all over Europe and further afield but for a lot of people I speak to in other countries it isn’t an obvious destination of choice.

The island has a strong domestic property market and doesn’t rely too heavily on overseas property buyers like some of the Mediterranean islands do, but at the same time those that do buy here play a good role in the economy overall.

The timing of the Commonwealth meeting is good as it’s just before the New Year when a lot of people decide where they will be going for their summer holidays, and next summer’s tourist could be next winter’s property buyer. But they’re only going to do that if they visit the island first, and I’m hoping that Malta will see an increase in tourists in 2006 – it really depends on whether the island takes this chance to market itself in the months ahead on the back of the free publicity the Commonwealth will bring..’

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting takes place very two years, and has its roots in the British Empire, with 53 members who were former British colonies belonging to the organisation.

Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the Commonwealth, and will be visiting with Prince Philip for a two day trip to Malta to open the meeting on November 25 in Valletta, the island’s capital. It will be the royal couple’s first visit to Malta since 1992, and welcoming crowds are expected in similar numbers to their previous four visits.

In addition to the Queen and Prince Philip, among the attendees will be the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Tony Blair, and the Prime Ministers of Canada, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Singapore and Australia.

Volvo Penta Outdrivers

Volvo Penta history goes back to 1868, when Shofde Gjuteri och Mekaniska Verkstad founded it. They started by manufacturing iron goods and hardware. During the 1920s the first breakthrough for Penta occurred. In 1922, the first outboard engine was introduced. In 1925, Penta got its first order for engines from AB Volvo; two years later the first Volvo cars were running using Penta engines entirely. In the 1930s, Volvos business became more important for Penta, and in 1935, Volvo purchased the engine company, and renamed it Volvo Pentaverken. The name was later shortened to just Volvo Penta. In 1946, a great innovation came into play; the first in-line six cylinder diesel engines were created. This meant that engines were now quieter and ran with pre combustion. This again allowed the company to be in the spotlight and forerunner of the industry. Another breakthrough came in 1954, when the first in a series of turbo diesel engines were introduced. In 1982, Volvo Penta became an independent subsidiary of the Volvo Group. These Volvo engines and out drivers are also being used in boats.

Volvo Penta Outdriver Repairs

If you are having problems with your Volvo Penta Outdrivers you might want to do the following things first before taking the car or boat into the shop for repair. First consult your owners manual and see what tips and advise they offer consumers who are experiencing problems with the outdrivers. If none of those tips work, before taking it in, you way want to try the following. If your system is electric and has a jack-screw type lift, and you can actually hear the motor running, then first make sure that the outdriver is in the down and in the locked position. You will then need to locate the motor for the lift, look for the black box that is just above the motor, with the wires running to it. Remove this box from the pole that it is sitting on. You will then need to remove the top part of the pole.

You will see that there is a nut molded onto the pole, it is approximately six inches from t he top. Once you remove it you will then be able to get a good view of the jack-screw and a two inch spring. Many times it is this spring that could be your problem, it may have lost its tension. If this is your problem, all that you will need to do is to add a new washer to the top of the spring; this will help to reestablish the tension in the spring that was missing before. You must make sure that the center of the washer is big enough for the jack-screw to fit exactly through, do not get a washer that is too small or too big, it will not work with the system. Then all that is left for you to do is to screw the top of the pole back on, and then replace the black box into its original position. When you reattach the black box, make sure that the nut is on the bottom of the box directly underneath the pole. If it is not in the correct position it will not function correctly and the motor will just stop.

Towns that are a must-see include Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, world-famous for their whites, reds, sherries, ports and brandies. Holiday Parks in the UK

The UK Holiday Park has become one of the great national institutions. Generations of families, from the turn of the century onwards, have left the UK’s cities to head for their two weeks summer holidays on the British coastline.

The Holiday Park had a fairly humble beginning, essentially offering accommodation, entertainment and food all under one roof, more often than not on the edge of a large traditional seaside town like Blackpool, Skegness or Great Yarmouth.

These holiday parks were very popular with families looking for affordable holidays, at a time when overseas travel was expensive and unobtainable for a large percentage of the general public.

However as overseas travel became more affordable Britain saw the rise of the package holiday in the 70’s and 80’s, which meant that the UK holidays no longer offered the value that was such a unique selling point for many of the popular parks. With the new found competition from guaranteed sun, cheap accommodation, food and drink, UK holiday parks came under increasing pressure.

The challenging times that faced the industry were definitely compounded by a change in perception of the holiday park experience. When you mentioned holiday parks people began to think of the popular TV series Hi-de-Hi and never ending rounds of knobbly knees competitions, donkey rides and red coat style entertainment. Unfortunately combined with cold and windy chalets and indifferent food!

The holiday park has however come a long way since its humble beginnings and in the last ten years the industry has seen a massive revolution in the breadth, quality and style of holiday parks available in the UK.

Like many UK tourism business the independent and multiple holiday park owners began to see a decrease in the interest in their holiday offering. The park owners came up with a number of solutions to counter the perception and the improve the quality of the holiday park experience.

Firstly the accommodation was upgraded. Customers were no longer happy with basic facilities, so holiday parks spent millions on improving accommodation facilities, from upgrading the standard rooms to developing penthouse apartments with plasma TV’s, four poster beds and room service. This resulted in holiday parks giving a more upmarket feel to all their accommodation and provided customers with a much greater range of choice.

Secondly the entertainment offering changed enormously. Some UK parks began to specialise in just offering specific entertainment breaks. Top comedians, shows and musical acts have begun to top the bill and themed weekends specialising in entertainment like county western, 60’s revivals and dance and sport breaks. Parks have also become better at targeting key groups like adult weekends, family activity holidays or special nights for stag and hen groups.

Thirdly the traditional three meals a day offering of parks has probably seen the greatest change. To adapt to the change needs of holiday makers more and more parks have began to offer self catering options rather than providing full or half board and charging extra for meals. Some of the larger chain parks have gone even further and don’t offer any catering, just inviting the restaurants and fast food places to offer food on the Park. However, as the parks themselves have diversified, offering different things to different holiday markets, so has the catering, and some holiday parks now make a virtue of the fact that they offer three top quality meals all day.

One example of a company who stayed ahead of the game was Potters Leisure Resort (http://www.pottersholidays.com/). As the UK’s only Five Star Independent Park they had long been investing to top quality infrastructure, entertainment and catering and the initial costs of the project have been rewarded with a reputation for top quality holiday park experience.

But Potters aren’t the only company offering top quality park style holidays. More and more developments in the UK are building the lodge style accommodation away from the traditional holiday park centres of seaside towns. The inland lodge style developments have specifically moved away from the ‘park’ image and now offer champagne and hot tubs style breaks in a quiet and secluded rural environment.

Parks are springing up right across the UK on the coast and inland and more than ever before the UK holiday park experience offers something for everyone from traditional entertainment in Great Yarmouth, to five star luxury in the Cotswolds. With so much innovation in the industry holiday parks will continue to offer more of what the holidaymaker wants and needs – a top quality holiday experience.

Wireless air travel

In early 2007, OnAir will arrive. OnAir is a service that uses satellite technology to enable air travel passengers to use wireless devices such as mobile phones, Internet connections from computers and Blackberries during a flight. The debate over the use of wireless technology during flight has been going on for years, and now that it’s about to happen, the debate is likely to heat up.

First of all, you should know that the first wave of this will not be happening on US flights. Airbus, the plane manufacturer who is creating this technology, is selling it to AirFrance. AirFrance is expected to have the service available to passengers in early 2007. Whether passengers will have to pay for the service like they pay for headphones for a movie is not known yet. Two other airlines, the British airline bmi and TAP Air Portugal are both considering using OnAir, but nothing has been finalized, yet.<
